FEATURED ETSY SHOP - ELECTRIC PENGUIN

Beer Bead Cuff Bracelet - Upcycled Beer Labels / Leather / Wood

by Pam

ELECTRIC PENGUIN

I love featuring other Etsy artists as it is such fun finding and seeing all the unique, creative talents that abound on Etsy!

Let's welcome Pam, and her Etsy shop, ELECTRIC PENGUIN, where you will find, as Pam states in her shop's introduction, "fun, funky and unique jewelry", such as the Beer Bead Cuff Bracelet pictured above. Pam has a wide selection of unique, bracelets, necklaces, earrings and more in her shop, so be sure to pay her a visit.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I was looking for a specific style of necklace and couldn't find it anywhere. Then inspriation hit and I realized that since I've always been a crafty person, I probably could make it. I did, and that was the catalyst.

Lilypond Necklace

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

It was the only one I had any talent for!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Taking the separate components and creating something totally new and unique out of them. Of course making a sale and getting wonderful feedback is pretty good too!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Interesting question!! I'd say it would be a papaya - not the same old fruit, but everyone likes it once they try it.

Jordanelle Earrings - Vintage Lucite / Copper
If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

That's an easy one - photography! I'm always trying to get "arty" shots when we're on vacation. Some are pretty good, but I'd love to have the talent to do it as a real job.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Be unique!

Tigereye Coil Bracelet

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Make what you love, not what others think you should make. You'll enjoy it much more!

Pam, thanks for sharing your thoughts and unique, fun jewelry with everyone!  You have some great, original designs.

Be sure to pay a visit to the ELECTRIC PENGUIN to see all the great pieces of jewelry that it has to offer.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - GILDED OWL JEWELRY

Calamity Jane... Opal and Fine Silver Earrings

Original Designs by Chris Wrinn

It is a pleasure to have Chris and her exquisite, original designed jewelry here on DZFANTASY as a featured Etsy artist.  Chris' Etsy shop is called GILDED OWL JEWELRY. When you pay a visit to GILDED OWL JEWELRY, you will find a wonderful selection of  pendants/necklaces, earrings, bracelets and more.

Let's learn a bit more about Chris and her artistic creativity by reading her interview below.

What led you to start creating your art/craft

I am a commercial illustrator by profession, but needed a relaxing, yet creative, outlet. The focus involved with designing jewelry is both refreshing and spontaneous. It lets me wander where I want.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Metals, especially wire and precious metals, have always appealed to me. Although I didn't know what to do with them until I took a course, there was always 'something about them' in the back of my mind.

Punk Phun Turquoise and Silver Pendant

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Spontaneity and not knowing how pieces will turn out. Sometimes you get a bolt of creativity and haven't a clue where it came from. It can take one by surprise. I also like to mold precious metal clays into unique patterns and designs that you can't get with traditional sheet metals. Wire wrapping is another aspect I enjoy. The wire can take on what seems a life of its own and lead you into places you wouldn't think of going. Every piece is unique.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Vegetable. Vegetables have much more texture than fruits.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Icing. I've done painting and metalwork, so the one thing left that interests me is taking the creative side of me and making Decorating Cakes into something rather unique. It's amazing what can be done with icing!

14K Gold Filled Classic Circlet Earrings

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I want my designs to grab your attention at first glance and I want the wearer to receive compliments. I'd like the customer be proud of the piece.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Find your passion and keep doing it. It may not be the easier way or it may not be the one you are more successful at, but keep at it. As long as you are happy when you are in the process of creating, that's what you should be doing.

Thanks, Chris, for a great interview and taking the time to share your wonderful creations with all of us.  Great style and workmanship! Your creations reflect that you love what you do!

34th Annual Madison Audubon Society Art Fair 2010

Lobby at Warner Park Community, Madison, WI

site of the

34th Annual Madison Audubon Society Art Fair

on Saturday May 1st

My first art show of the season is coming up fast!   Next Saturday,  on May 1st, I will be exhibiting at the Warner Park Community Center in Madison, WI.  The photo above shows the lobby as you come into the building.  The artists' indoor booths are set up in the gym, hallway and community room of the building.  There are also outdoor booths, but since one can never be sure of our Wisconsin weather, I always opt to have an indoor space.  This has proven to be a good choice over the years because it always seems to rain or be rather chilly the day of the show.

The Art Fair hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Below is a link to the Audubon Society web page where you can find out more about this organization and visit the links about the show and the exhibiting artists.

I'm looking forward to this year's show, and to seeing how my new "fiber fantasy jewelry" goes over, along with my new fantasy figures.  Last year's show was a bit slow, so I'm hoping this year will be a lot better.  I'll be doing a "review" of the show and also have photos, so be sure to stop back for a visit.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - AUTUMN RAIN CREATIONS BY APRIL

Photography Print 5x7 Summer Day
Late in the summer when all the plants and flowers are big and beautiful.

by April

 of AUTUMN RAIN CREATIONS

WELCOME, April and her Etsy shop, AUTUMN RAIN CREATIONS.  When you pay a visit to April's shop, you will find a lovely selection of -  Photographic Art, Handcrafted and Upcycled Vintage Earrings. Craft Supplies. Flax Pillow Packs. Vintage Treasures.

Before you visit, AUTUMN RAIN CREATIONS, take a moment to read April's interview  below to get a bit of an "insight" into what started April on her creative adventures.

What led you to start creating your art/craft

I don't think there was anything that led me to start doing this it's just there in me always has been. My grandmother, dad and my daughter are very artistic, so it has always been around me one way or the another. It may sound cliche, but as a child I was always creating something. I have always been intrigued and interested in all art. I love being around it.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I have always just worked with what I enjoyed and felt drawn to at that moment.

Purple Glass Copper Dangle Earrings

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

The solidarity aspect is most enjoyable to me. That's when I just put my whole self into my project and nothing else is on my mind but the creation itself.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

When I am taking pictures, I really see so much of the beauty of nature (God's labor) so I guess I would have to say fruit.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Probably painting. I use to draw and paint when I was young and have always wanted to start back up again. My daughter is 17 and paints/draws so artisticly. It motivates me.

Purple Leaves Eye Pillow

Eye Pillow Pack filled with Flaxseed. Use cold or hot. Heat in microwave in intervals to achieve gentle moist warmth or store in refrigerator/freezer too cool or help unpuff eyes. Wonderful for a number of aches and pains. Measures 9x3 inches. Made of cotton fabric and flaxseed.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I think it's more of a personal inner strength than a message for me. I do it because it makes me feel good, it's calming, it's a creative outlet and sharing it helps me show how I feel about life at that time.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

I don't believe in what's best selling or following the trend. My advise would be draw your creativity from your heart and roll with it.

Thanks, April, for taking the time to share your thoughts and creativity here on DZFANTASY.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - The Charming Place

Flying Fantasy Fish Print 8.5 x 11

by Shelley Szczucki of The Charming Place

CHARMING, WHIMSICAL, ENCHANTING, COLORFUL....These are just a few of the adjectives I'd use to describe the delightful art of Shelley Szczucki!  I'm very happy to welcome Shelley and her Etsy shop, THE CHARMING PLACE, as a featured artist here on DZFANTASY.  What an appropriate name for Shelley's shop!  When you pay a visit, you will find whimsical scrabble tile pendants created with Shelley's own original art, and also art prints such as the one pictured above!  They will be sure to make you smile!

Let's learn a little bit more about this talented artist by reading her interview below.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I started to create crafts when I was very young, sometime in the 70's. My mother was somewhat of a "Martha Stewart" and we did mostly everything together....many hours reading magazines and picking out just the right craft to do. I was also a very young artist, picking up a crayon and writing and doodling on just about anything....much to my parents dismay. After many years of day to day life and not much to do with the selling of my art and crafts, I started to search on the computer for more ideas. I came across Ebay, and that was the start, I found so many things people were doing, and I thought to myself......I can do that. So I went about selling my art there and then that led to Etsy!

Handmade Scrabble Tile Whimsical Folk Art SISTERS
by Shelley Szczucki

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I love many mediums, but I try to stay somewhat consistent with Etsy. I display my acrylic and watercolor art in my shop. Also my art on jewelry, just to liven things up a bit.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I love the freedom it gives me. Everything in life is almost written for you......school, job, taxes. This is my little world of creativity that nobody can tell me what to paint, or how to paint or anything!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

A fruit sundae.......a jumble of lovely colours!

Folk Art Whimsical Cat Gardener Scrabble Tile Pendant
by Shelley Szczucki

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity" what would that be, and why?

Probably my acrylic paintings. I love the vibrancy the medium gives me in terms of colours.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Happy, Creative, Smile!

Fantasy Fairy Print 8.5 x 11
by Shelley Szczucki

This painting was done by randomly painting with watercolor paint, then sketching over to form a cute posed fairy. She just appeared out of the paint.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Never give up! There will always be people out there that are better than you and there will also be people that are not. Strive to do your very best, and you can't go wrong.

Shelley, thanks for taking the time to share your delightful, artistic creations with everyone, and for your thoughts!  I'd say your message of "Happy, Creative, Smile!" is definitely the message being shown in your work!

Creating knit bead fantasy earrings.

The last couple of months I've been busy designing and creating my new line of "fiber fantasy necklaces and earrings".

I thought it might be fun to show how the above pair of earrings started out and ended up as shown in the photo above.

In the photo below you will see the "makings" for one earring.  I have knit the section of ribbon yarn that I will use for this earring.  It consists of 5 stitches using a size 5 needle, and is a straight knit stitch.  It is 5 stitches x 6 rows in size.

As you can see in the above photo, the other materials I used for 1 earring is a gold plated filigree bead cap, gold plated earwire, and a gold plated eye pin,  to which I've already added a tiny gold plated leaf bead

This photo shows that I have folded the tiny handknit section of ribbon yarn in half and have started to sewn in closed along the one side.  I use a very tiny needle and clear 4# test fishing line.

The handknit ribbon yarn section is now sewed down the one side. I thought it looked rather like a colorful little catapillar!

The next step is adding whatever bead or embellishment I've decided to use before adding the handknit section of the earring.  In this case, I've used an 8mm Swarovski crystal.  Now is when things start to get a little tricky.

Once the head pin is slipped through the center of the handknit piece, I start sculpting it into a bead, again using the clear 4# test fishing line and a very tiny needle.  It is rather difficult to hold the head pin in place and stitch the knit piece, and this is what takes the most time when creating these knit beads.

I keep stitching, in and out, and around about, until I feel I have the knit piece in a shape to which I can now add the top bead cap, so that I can also add whatever other crystals to the top and create the loop for the earwire.  Once this is done, I can finish sculpting the bead without it slipping around too much.

You can see in the photo above how uneven the knit bead still is?  It still needs a lot of stitching and shaping.  This pair of earrings took me almost 2.5 hours to create.  Some go a bit faster, but basically they average about 2 hours.  It is also rather difficult to find bead caps that work with the handknit beads that I create.  I spend a lot of time searching for just the right cap that will work.  I've found that there isn't a lot of variety in bead caps for my purpose. If anyone knows of a good source for unique caps, I'd love to know about them. I buy on Etsy and also through several bead catalogs.

I've found creating these one-of-a-kind fiber knit earrings a challenge, but also great fun!  I love all the different yarns and colors!  Below is a photo of the finished earrings along with a matching handknit flower necklace.

I am having a "WINNER'S CHOICE GIVEAWAY" for 1 pair of my fiber fantasy earrings, so if anyone is interested, click on the link below to enter the giveaway. Winner will be able to pick 1 pair of earrings from any earrings that are in my DZFANTASY shop on Etsy and Zibbet, at the close of the giveaway.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - Artist, Painter, Illustrator, Gwen Duda at GwensArtDreamscape

Gwen Duda Fine Art Original Oil Painting-titled While I Lie Here...

I'm happy to weclome Gwen Duda, a fine artist and illustrator to be a featured artist here on DZFANTASY. Gwen creates her paintings using oils, acrylics, watercolor and more as her mediums.  Be sure to pay a visit to Gwen's Etsy shop....GWENS ART DREAMSCAPE!  You will find a wonderful variety in her subject matter.

But first....take some time to read Gwen's interview below.  I always find it fascinating to learn a bit about the artist behind the wonderful creations.

What led you to start creating your art?

I was just doing it without any outer motivation. It was totally inner driven. I have always been creating, as a young child as far back as I can remember.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Oils are luscious, mysterious. Acrylics are fast and immediate. I like both. I would love to sculpt, work with glass, metal, clay. I would love to design clothing work with textiles. Papers are beautiful. I would need nine lifetimes to even feel slightly satiated creatively. For now I paint and to get proficient in that skill one does have to study in that area. Painting is the medium that allows me to convey emotions, to help the viewer experience their own life, their own responses, their own emotional terrain. I think that is why I stay focused on it.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Just that, the engagement of the viewer and how it interacts with their world view, their emotional terrain.

Gwen Duda Original Acrylic Painting titled- While the Cat is Away

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable to describe your art, what would you choose and why?

*laughing* Hmmm, maybe grapes in that you can drink them juiced, ferment them to wine and they change your perception, eat them and be refreshed, or be more than sweetened having them as jam or jelly. My work is eclectic, yet has an similar emotive ability through all my work.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be and why?

Music - I think it is even MORE communicative in that it needs no language to convey its message or to connect.

Gwen Duda Fine Art Original Oil Painting 16 in x 16 in Sunflower - Direct from Artist

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art?

Each piece has it's own value, its own message to the viewer, and I let it be between them.

What advice do you hve for other artists/crafters?

I paint, I create because I have to. It's part of who I am, it's genetically imbued in my cells I guess you would say. Each has to determine for themselves why they do what they do and why they want to continue or not. Keep the flame alive and don't look to the outside for validation of your work. It's nice if you get it but it won't motivate you consistently. Good luck and good art to you!

Gwen, thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and artistic creativity with all of us.  You not only express yourself well with a brush, but also with words.  Great thoughts and paintings!

HOW ABOUT ZIBBET AS AN "ON-LINE" SELLING VENUE!

I have just started an additional DZFANTASY shop on ZIBBET.  My main on-line selling venue will still be Etsy, but I thought I'd give Zibbet a try with some of my items. I went with the "free" account for now to see how things go.

With a free account you are limited to listing only 25 items in your shop, but since I'm basically going to be listing my "fiber fantasy jewelry" on there, I feel that won't be a problem for now.

If anyone has a shop on Zibbet, it would be fun to hear your comments here, as to how you like it and the "pros and cons", etc.

After I am on Zibbet for a while, I will put together some of my observations and share them here with you.

CLICK on the link below to visit my very new, tiny little shop on Zibbet.  I will be adding more items in the coming weeks.

MAGICAL "FAIRY CHARM EARRINGS"...will be sure to bring you a magical feeling!

(click on the title above to learn more about them)

Wear these little beauties and feel the magic!!  The tiny fairies will dance and twirl as you wear them!  Light and airy as a fairy!

If you are looking for a bit of fun and fancy to perk up any outfit...give these earrings a try.  I designed the handknit "focal" beads using a beautiful satin finish ribbon yarn.  Creating these free form knit beads takes me about 2 hours, as they are shaped by using a clear 4# test fishing line, which can't be seen in the completed beads.

One of these days when I have more time, I will do a tutorial to show how the beads start out and end up in various shapes such as the ones above.  It is a technique I just recently taught myself.   It does take a bit of time to create each bead, but I have found it fun to see how they look when completed.  Adding Swarovski crystals and recently charms, has added to their magical look and sparkle!

Great gift ideas...either for yourself or someone special.  No two will ever look exactly the same.
