What led you to start creating your art/craft?

Ever since I was a little kid, I love drawing, painting, and crafting. I loved creating things for my family and me. I always refined some existing designs with my whimsical thoughts.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

With all my creations, I started with hand-stitching when I was little. I remember the first bag I made is a small little jeans handbag with a little patchwork. Soon thereafter, I have learned the most practical skills I ever felt, which was sewing. I tried to make decorations, bags, accessories, anything that can be created by a sewing machine.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I try my best to create an accessory that has not existed, and hope customers would find something unique and represent them.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I would choose bookmaking. I always do it in my spare time, and love to play with differents texture of papers.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I've been a crafter since I was in middle school - I used to stay up late nights on my bedroom floor making jewelry for myself and my friends. As a teenager I learned to crochet, knit, and quilt, and I started taking pottery classes in college. My mom was an avid antique collector and period crafter and always cross-stitched, quilted, stenciled, sewed, painted...I got the need-to-make gene from her and took it in my own direction.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Jewelry is something I've always been able to come back to, no matter how many other projects I try out. When I started on Etsy, I had just been back home to visit my dad and childhood home and had gone through a bunch of my old things, including some vintage jewelry stashes and beads/supplies. That got me back into making jewelry around the same time I moved and was job hunting for a couple of months. Etsy seemed like a great way to spend my down time and relieve stress. And I've stuck with it for almost a year so far!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I love that beads can surprise me - I might have the same set of beads for months and contemplate getting rid of them because I don't think I'll ever use them. Then all of a sudden one day I'll think of a way they can be used out of nowhere. I also love the idea that someone out there is wearing something I made, in a city I've never visited, and might get a compliment on it.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

A pomegranate. It's complex, beautiful, and unique in a way that surprises you if you've never cut one open before.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Clay - right now I'm low on funds so I can't afford to be taking pottery classes, but I loved doing it when I was able to. I would have gotten into making more pendants and miniature pottery if I hadn't had to quit my class. You have to have patience and a vision when you start creating a piece of ceramic art and I think those were good things for me to practice.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

A piece of jewelry that you love doesn't have to break the bank. I try to keep my prices low because my target market is people like me, who love wearing unique jewelry but can't afford to spend a ton on it - or would rather spend their money on more important things.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Make sure to take some time to make something for yourself once in a while - a pair of earrings just for you, something to put up on your wall, something really good for dessert. It's easier to remember why you do this when you keep a reminder of your own creativity around, instead of shipping it all off to somebody else.

"This unique one-of-a-kind bracelet features 3 lampwork beads handmade by myself. The main bead is white with yellow center in the shape of a daisy. The 2 smaller ones are yellow. I used swarovski crystals in matching colors to compliment the lampwork beads and add a little bit of sparkle. All of the findings are sterling silver. This bracelet is about 7 1/4" to 7 1/2" long."

What led you to start creating your art/craft?


My sister-in-law makes lampwork beads and so one time when we went to visit her she showed me how, and I was hooked! It was hard to pry me away from the torch. We live 1,600 miles away so for about the next year or so I only had a couple of weeks to make beads when we went to visit. She decided to get a new kiln and oxygen concentrator and was going to give me her old ones. My hubby surprised me one day with a torch. Then there was no stopping me.

This unique one-of-a-kind watch has 8 lampwork beads handmade by myself. It is 8" long so if you have a smaller wrist it will fit looser like a bracelet and if you have a bigger wrist it will fit tighter. It has a lobster claw style clasp. It has a working battery, I pulled out the stem to save battery life.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Soon after my hubby got me a torch and my sister-in-law gave me some of her equipment, I was getting quite a collection of beads, so I decided to start making jewelry.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Making lampwork beads is very relaxing to me. I can lose hours. I just love trying new things and seeing what happens, but I also really enjoy making them into jewelry, and the "oooo that's so pretty" I get when I wear something I have made!

These unique one of a kind earrings have lampwork beads handmade by myself. Each earring has a lampwork bead and a swarovski crystal. The lampwork beads are ivory with a blue swirl.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Hmmm... I guess a watermelon. Who doesn't love watermelon! With my jewelry and lampwork beads there is something for everyone. I use many different colors in my beads and jewelry. I can even make tie tacks and cuff links for the guys!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Pottery has always interested me. It is something I would love to try one day. I just haven't gotten a chance yet.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I'm not one who tries for the strange or wacky creations. I want my jewelry to be something that people can wear everyday and love!

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Never give up in finding your niche!

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

A trip to Disneyland. I visited a little shop in downtown Disney and fell in love with all the unique jewelry in the shop! And ever since then I've been creating my own pieces.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Serious internet searching, I wasn't sure where I wanted to start... but then I found this stuff called resin, and you can create just about anything you can think up with it! I fell in love! Then I discovered pearls and crystals and more recently stretchy bracelets.

What an awesome explosion of color!!! I adore the colors pink and orange so I used fun pink and orange beads! Then I paired them with some shiny Swarovski crystals, and to pull it all together a large green crystal, FUN!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

At the end of a hard day at work, I can come home and use my creative side. Also when my friends, family, or strangers truly love my work, it's so rewarding when people enjoy your work!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

LoL! What a great question! Probably citrus like oranges and limes, and oh I love raspberries... bright colors! I love bright and sparkly! hehe


If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Currently I'm looking into metalworking. I've always had an interest in it and I would love to learn how to work with metal, make rings, or unique pendants/chains/whatever!

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

To just be yourself. Have fun with what you wear... I think the world is too serious as it is, and I think a lot of my pieces are just fun.

If you want to do something, do it! If it's what you enjoy, then it won't matter what others think, or if you make it big, don't let anyone tell you what you can or can't do.

"The inspiration for this bracelet came from the sunshine charm I handcrafted from precious metal clay. Call it a reaction to all the cold weather and snow that's been blowing around. I wanted fiery reds and contrasting whites for a beautiful statement bracelet, and I'm pretty sure that's what I got!"

Let's welcome Erin and her Etsy shop, HEARTSABUSTIN. No matter how many jewelry artists I've "featured" on DZFANTASY, I always find it fascinating to see how each artist has their own unique styles and designs. The ideas are endless....which makes for a lot of fun in finding just the right piece of jewelry! 

We also see so many different names used for each artists' shop, so I thought it would be interesting to  read here, why Erin's shop is called "Heartsabustin"

"Heartsabustin is a wildflower that grows all over the eastern United States in moist forests. This little plant is rather unassuming in the spring, but in the fall, the seed pods burst open to display hundreds of little red heart shaped berries. The plant was a favorite of my great-grandmother's and inspired the name of my wonderful shop here at Etsy."

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I decided I could make jewelry as pretty or prettier than the things I saw in the department stores. I was right - and it has lead to a wonderful realm of learning!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I started using glass beads, but I knew I wouldn't be happy until I was able to create some of my components myself. I started out with polymer clay, but that didn't quite fit the bill. I've been eyeballing precious metal clay for a while and finally took the plunge when I got money for Christmas from my parents. It was love at first sight!

I love being inspired. Fabrics inspire me, color combinations I see out in the world are a great inspiration. Nature is also a wonderful place to find inspiration, especially since PMC lends itself so well to that "organic" look I like.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Oranges! Sweet and hot colored all at the same time.

Out of Africa - handcrafted bracelet

The centerpiece of this bracelet is a piece of African turquoise - a jasper that is dyed and used as a substitute for turquoise. Another substitute is magnesite, which is the beautiful bright blue stone hanging from the links. The other stones include white jasper, smoky quartz, pearls, Swarovski crystals, fluorite, and cloisonne beads. The wirework was handcrafted by me. This bracelet retains its feminine feel despite my eclectic use of materials.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I would like to get a better handle on working fiber into my pieces. I quilt and sew, as well, so it seems natural to want to include that aspect of my craftiness into my jewelry making. I just haven't completely figured it out, yet.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

That I love what I do and that each piece means something to me, as well as to the person who buys it.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Do what you love. I know we've all heard it before, but if this crazy thing we call Etsy and crafting isn't fun, it will show in your work. It must always be something that you love. If you don't love it anymore, find something else that sparks you!

ABOUT THE NECKLACE:

Pretty in pinks and pale greens....this butterfly necklace will bring a bit of fantasy and color to any outfit!



SIZE: FABRIC BUTTERFLY, 1.75" X 1.75", Handknit ribbon yarn chain, one side of the chain measures 15.25" long from top of chain to tip of butterfly's wings. Total length of chain around would be about 30.5". Width of chain is .50". When on, the chain hangs down about 15". The chain has been knit in a Knit one, Purl one stitch. It will easily slip over your head. One size fits all!


I created the knit chain out of a beautiful, satin textured ribbon yarn. It is just gorgeous!

This fabric butterfly was created out of a beautiful cotton batik fabric, lightly stuffed with acrylic fiberfill, top-stitched into a design and has inner wire armatures.

The body was created using Swarovski crystals, strung on gold plated wire and has been handstitched onto the butterfly. The butterfly has been permanently handsewn onto the necklace.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I have always been an artsy/crafty person. When I was a kid,I was constantly doing some type of craft from macramé to knitting, to drawing, you name it I probably did it. In 2007, I lost my job; I started making jewelry as gifts for my family. At one point, I made many more pieces than I needed so I decided to try my hand at selling some of them on Etsy.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I have always loved jewelry and I love the relationship that women have with their jewelry. It makes us feel beautiful, feminine, and powerful. It affects us in many ways, and even if a piece does not cost thousands of dollars, it is still precious to us. Therefore, I choose Jewelry.

The part of jewelry making I find most enjoyable is designing the piece. Creating jewelry is very therapeutic for me.

I would choose a tomato, because they come in many varieties of shape, sizes and colors.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I've always been the artsy/crafty sort. When I was a kid I was constantly making things out of random objects. I can't think of one time in my life when I wasn't engaged in some sort of art activity, whether it be writing, photography, painting or crafting. A couple of years ago, I started making jewelry and it became a favorite pass time. I don't even remember what sparked the interest other than the fact that I love accessories, but at one point I made way more pieces than I needed so I decided to try my hand at selling some of them on Etsy.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?


I played around with various materials until I found the ones I liked best. I tend to go for a more eclectic feel so using found objects is my main source of inspiration which are also used in my pieces.


What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?


There's something very therapeutic about creating objects with my hands. I enjoy the time I spend actually making the pieces.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?


A mango. Not so foreign that no one "gets" it, but just exotic enough that it stands out in the fruit bowl.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?


Photography. I have always loved being behind the lens.


What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?


Individuality, passion, soulfulness.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?


Create with your heart.
