The Magic of Laurel Burch Fabric

WHIMSICAL CAT FAIRY 

I have been designing and creating my original designed fiber sculpted fantasy sculptures for over 20 years now, and one of my all time favorite fabrics were those designed by the talented fabric artist, Laurel Burch.  

Her colorful, whimsical designs inspired so many of my fairies and mermaids over the years.  I was so sad when this great artist passed away.  Recently I was quite amazed to note how her various designed fabrics have skyrocketed in price!  Her use of color and whimsey appeal to so many!!  Designs that years ago used to be anywhere from $10.00 - $12.00 a yard are now going for anywhere from $25.00 - $69.00 a yard.  I am so happy I had the opportunity years ago to purchase so many of her wonderful designs.

These are just a very small sample of some of my creations using Laurel Burch fabric.  I have created so many over the years, but don't have the photos any more.  I do hope to be able to create several more in the future.  Those photos above with links, can be seen in my DZFANTASY shop on Etsy.

Decorate with Fiber Fantasy Butterflies

If you love butterflies as I do, you might just want to have me create several of my original designed fiber fantasy butterflies in your choice of colors with Swarovski crystal accents. (Note: the large butterfly at the top of the flower photo is the largest butterfly I create and is 12" long x 11" wide at the top tip of the wings)

I can create them in several different sizes the smallest being approximately 1.75" x 1.75", and the largest 12" long.

The above photo shows several of the 1.75" size butterflies accenting my flower photos in my kitchen.  Each butterfly's body is created with Swarovski crystals.  These can also be made into "pins", if you'd like to wear your butterfly. Below is a photo of 3 different size butterflies accenting the flower photo in one of my bedrooms.





Below is a photo of a trio of fabric butterflies which I created for my great niece's first baby girl who will be making her debut sometime in June.  Her theme for the baby's room is going to be butteflies!!  Her colors for the room where to be light greens, pinks, and lavender...hence the colors below!  The top green butterfly measures 12" long, the pink butterfly is about 7" long x 7" wide at the top tips.  The tiny lavender butterfly is about 4.5" wide at the top.



Whether for a baby's room or little girls room, or even a big girl's room, butterflies make charming, accents in whatever colors you may like!

The reason I'm willing to donate all my sales  to help all the little creatures that are looking for their "forever" homes is because I have the time, materials and feel there is such a great need to help our 4 legged friends, who ask for nothing more than love and a good home.  This is a privately run dog rescue where I have been volunteering for the past year.  It made me realize just what an enormous amount of money it takes to care for these little "buddies'....food, vet bills being the most expensive, and just the ongoing needs of these rescued animals.  Many come from puppy mills, strays, owner surrenders and more.

 All dogs taken in by Bichon and Little Buddies have their medical needs taken care of, they are also spayed/neutered, microchipped, dental work done before they are adopted out.  Below are several photos of some of the little ones now living at Bichon and Little Buddies Rescue, while they wait for their "forever" homes.

Meet my new baby....HARLEY!

I haven't had much time in the past 5 months to keep up with my DZFANTASY blog or my Etsy shop, as I've been taking care of my husband who was diagnosed with terminal cancer.  On October 2nd, my husband, Chuck, passed away after a 5 month battle with cancer.  

I recently purchased this lovely little cockapoo boy, whom I named "HARLEY" in honor of my husband, who not only worked for Harley Davidson for 35 years as a high speed test driver, but also an  A Mechanic.  Harley motorcycles have always played an important part in our lives, so this is the perfect name for my new little friend.  He really keeps my smiling!

I hope to get back into the swing of getting new artists features here on my blog along with giveaways and other topics of interest.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

Strictly speaking I only started sewing after attending a patchwork class, but way before that, I had art classes all the time! And it was only after being inspired by so many plush artists I read about in books that got me thinking, “Hey! That looks fun and something I could do IT too!” The boredom following the long break before entering University also helped fuel the start of Momshoo.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

As mentioned before, plush artists were my first inspirations and trying to come up with my own plush for a major art project in school got me hooked on sewing! It wasn’t difficult to realize I wanted to work on all things fabric.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Hmm… tough decision. I think I like the finding of inspiration (usually involves shopping around and I can disguise it as ‘working’)… Sewing is also very therapeutic, but I love putting on the finishing touches as I get that sense of satisfaction seeing the readymade products!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

The lemon! The fruit is sour and some people (like me) love it, others do not. In some way my craft is very specific and you either like it a lot or you don’t! Which is the reason why I don’t actively push my products to passers-by at flea markets; hard-sell doesn’t work for my kind of products. And for those who are interested, they usually appreciate my creations a lot more.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Wood! Ah, yes, most definitely wood. I am always attracted to the tiny wooden toys of Germany, but I haven’t had a chance to learn wood-craft as I haven’t found anyone in Singapore who teaches it.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

There are many ways you can add ‘fun’ in your lives!

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Shop around and experiment often. I find this is a good way for me to come up with new products. (I am still very new to all this! Maybe they have advice for me too? )
