What led you to start creating your art/craft?

My sister and I were in charge of our Church's Craft Sale in the Fall of 2007. We had so much fun coming up with ideas and exploring our creative side. When the sale was done, it was hard to stop, so I didn't!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I mostly work with fabric and paper. I love all the different patterns and colors in them!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

When it all comes together to make a beautiful piece. Especially one that I like.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Hmmm...this one is a toughie. How about a fruit salad. Is that cheating?!? I love color, texture, patterns, variety, all the yummy goodness that is in a fruit salad.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Someday I would like to try clay, but it'll be a while before I get to it.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Life is short, enjoy it! Surround yourself with beautiful colors and fun patterns.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Put your heart into it. Live thru your art.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

When I was a little girl, I had an annoying little sister (she’s not annoying any more thank goodness!). We shared the same toys and she had the annoying habit of wanting to play with THE VERY DOLL I’m playing with, and I was always told to ‘let the baby have it’. So I came up with a way to not ‘let the baby have it’ - I made clothes for them. It didn’t take me long to realize that I enjoyed making the clothes more than I did playing with the dolls…..and that was how my love for sewing began. As a teenager, the bulk of my pocket money went on books, which meant I couldn’t afford to buy jewellery, unless I gave up the books (to me that was as good as refusing water on a hot afternoon), so I learned to make them and the zeal to experiment further began when people started asking where I bought them because they wanted them as well.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I make the things I wear (clothes and jewellery), so it seemed logical to make them for sale as well. It won’t feel like its a job, but it should bring in the money.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Both actually. Then again it depends on the mood I am in. Often times though, I’d create a garment and find it lacking without a piece of jewelery and sometimes it is the other way around - the jewellery creates the perfect dress.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

An Apple. I love apples and feel ‘half-fed’ when I don’t eat at least one at the end of the day….same feeling…somewhat, when I don’t create, it feels like my creative self was starved.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Most likely crafts parties. I like socializing and interacting with people and sometimes you get great ideas from comments and suggestions. Besides, human nature makes it easier for people to want to purchase something from you if they are being fed for free, even if it is just drinks and finger food. lol.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Beauty and Simplicity. Things (and people) can still be beautiful even if simple.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

The competition may seem great and the market slow. What is important is believing in your art and hanging in there. The difference between those that sell (eventually) and those that don’t is that the former persist and the latter pack up and leave. And never pass up a chance to let one more person know about what you are doing, even if you think they may not be interested. There is just no telling, they may know someone that knows someone that is looking for just what you are making.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

After many years doing and selling decoupage items, I discovered ACEOs and collage. From there I have been trying all different forms of mixed media and assemblage and enjoying every minute of it.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I have not decided to settle on one medium. This is an exciting journey which may not have a true final destination.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

The most enjoyable aspect is that moment when it all comes together for me on an idea. Suddenly, as I work, I just know or find what to add or what to take away from a piece. When I know the piece has expressed a part of me I wanted to give away or share, it is ready for the person who will "connect" with it to have it.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable to describe your "creativity", what would that be and why?

I would say an artichoke would be the vegetable I would choose. Naturally, it is because of the many layers! Then, inside the artichoke, is the best or sweetest part. I feel like on my journey I am peeling off layers and finding more and more within myself to express.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be, and why?

If I had to choose one medium it would be collage with paper and paint. Again, for the layers. I feel our hearts, our very souls, are layers of consciousness. Thoughts, ideas, expressions, all contain meanings which are deep and meaningful.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I want to convey both HOPE and HUMOR. There is a part of us, no matter what is happening in our lives that holds fast to hope. Humor helps us see things from a unique vantage point and contributes to hope by creating more coping skills for us.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

My advice to others is: Let go! Mostly, let go of the idea that you cannot express yourself! Even if you cannot draw and have not yet been trained to paint, you CAN learn to create if you can push past doubt!

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

When my full-time artist sister cleaned out a deceased friend's studio several years ago, I was sent a box of beads and supplies. Morbid? True! That was the start of the jewelry making phase. And let me advise everyone out there - don't start cross stitching!! You cannot stop!! Some years ago I stitched a pattern over a 3 or 4 month period during a cross country trip in our camper that says 'Give your children 2 strong things, One is roots, the other wings' with all these monarch butterflies and ivy. What was I thinking???? Of course, a sewing machine wedding gift was sweet too (were they trying to tell me something about saving money?). None of my totes, wallets or pillows are for sale on my website.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

My husband is a rock hound (travels the earth in search of natural stone and fossils!) and would cringe at purchasing a stone. Since diamonds are still MY best friend, I followed him gathering stone and shells and whatever is shiny and pretty. But honestly, I have no qualms about buying stones. Otherwise, necessity being the mother of invention, says it all with respect to the other mediums I dabble in such as sewing, embroidery and pressing flowers. When my kids were really little I spent years 'making something from nothing' including puppets out of scraps, ships out of cardboard and string, and city streets out of big rolls of paper. Nowadays, I feel connected to the past, drying and pressing flowers for cards like my grandmother might have!! Being an environmentalist since 5th grade, I want to spread the word about California native plants (water-wise!) and use those from my yard to press and gather for the cards.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

NATURE! RECYCLING! My biggest thrill seems to be finding the perfect use for that lonely something saved in my supplies. Look at the 'frame' on this necklace, it was picked up by my son on the beach. The remainder of the strand is recaptured from a piece I took apart.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

I am most certainly a vegetable! And probably a carrot because my things are classic in design, are sensible and affordable, and subtly sweet!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Soon, maybe even in 2009, I will venture into the realm of photography! Except I need a decent digital camera. My 1st generation Canon is on its last legs (er, last batteries). Back a mere 15-20 years ago in the 35mm SLR ages, when people developed and printed in a dark room, (!?) I gave my ole Nikon a workout for awhile. I love the technical yet creative aspect of photography. Although the Nikon is now gathering dust, I hear you can use the same lenses on a digital Nikon body! Birthday wishlist anyone?

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Each item I make contains a blend of texture, material, color, shape. When these come together in harmony, voila! A small masterpiece. I hope people notice the design is atypical of usual commercial stuff. And the underlying clever angles in many of my things! Do you see the message in this (not just the quote)?

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Be true to yourself! Especially in pricing. Keep the critics at arm's length who may advise you to price higher or lower. Make what you love and not what will sell. That's easy for me to advise, being non-dependent on my craft income, absolutely not easy for full-time artists to follow.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I grew up in a very ‘artistic’ environment. My father was a well known artist and the house always smelled of turpentine and linseed oil! Words like ‘color’, ‘composition’ ‘design’ etc. were part of our everyday vocabulary. But even in this environment, I never considered myself to have any talent for anything. Then, a few years ago I ran into an old college friend of mine and found out that she was working with fiber and macramé. Although she did large commissioned hangings etc, she showed me some of the jewelry she had made with thread. I was hooked. She was kind enough to teach me this technique. Since then I have been enjoying this craft (sometimes I think of it as art). The second part of this creative process is equally important to me. I do work with other materials besides thread and glass beads. This is what I would call ‘mainstream’ jewelry. I love gemstones, wood and resin beads and the colour and textures of all these materials combined. I offer both these styles in my shop. I would love to use different types of beads, other than just glass in the macramé styles. Unfortunately, I am restricted in this area because of the size of drilled holes in most of these beads, especially gemstones. I am fascinated with lamp work (flame worked) beads. I took a course on flame working last year, but I am still not good enough to use my own beads in my work. These would lend themselves extremely well to macramé knotting.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I didn’t ‘decide’ on the medium. The medium came to me quite by chance as explained above.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

It’s the design aspect. You see some beautiful beads, all in different shapes and sizes, and think about what you can do with them, and slowly, a design is born. The rest is just execution. The technique of knotting in macramé is not difficult. There are only a few knots that are involved, so the execution may not be hard, but it is definitely time consuming. It is the design concept that takes me the longest time.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

It has to be the Alphanso mango, the king of all fruit. The smell and color of a ripened mango in full season can be maddening! The color is so rich and lush and warm. My jewelry is also full of these rich and luscious colors. Visually and tactically beautiful.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I would like to work with textiles some day. I love the idea of creating designs, with paint or block printing on fabric.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

To think outside the box. To bring new life to ‘old’ traditional materials and make them beautiful again.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Get good at what you love to do. Enjoy the process of learning and creating. I am constantly striving to improve. Having a shop on Etsy brings about the need to excel in other areas too, like photography, marketing etc. I have much to learn in these departments.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

My mother and her sister learned a tradition of making flowers, and from the time I was young I used to see her make bouquets for brides and make flowers for arrangements. My house was always full of handmade flowers and everyone used to come and admire them. Now when I became a stay at home mom, I decided to put my spin on her art and St Jude’s Creations was born. Many of my friends liked the arrangements I made and hence it "bloomed". With my limited time, I put up a web site and have been receiving orders through the site mainly, and now I am foraying into the Etsy world!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I decide mainly on what the project needs and the clients request. I am pretty versatile in many mediums, hence I use paper, fabric and air dried clay.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

The creative aspects, sometime I feel I am too particular on what I want, that I spent waaay too much time on the project trying to pefect it, but have always loved the end result and the satisfaction that comes from it!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

hmmm, a kiwi fruit maybe, l love it's vibrant green color and how it's dresses up things!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Water colors and painting - have been pretty good at artistic stuff, but never have the time right now to pursue it!!!

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Anything can be turned into beautiful things if you have a creative mind! My mother used to make flowers out of the most oddest things, including an onion's outer skins! (the flowers were gorgeous mind you)

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Be creative and pursue your dreams!

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I started making lampwork beads after I took a bracelet-making class at JoAnn's. I loved the class, but I wasn't thrilled with the bead selection there. Having absolutely no experience with jewelry making or beads, I turned to the internet for some research. It didn't take me long to find lampwork (or glass) beads. They are so beautiful! I found a place about 40 minutes away where I could take a beginner's class and I signed up. I loved it from the moment I lit my torch.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

There was no question for me, I wanted to learn how to make lampwork beads. I really wanted to make beautiful focal beads or bead sets to be used in the jewelry I planned to make, but somehow I got side-tracked and started making critter beads. I came across a penguin bead tutorial online and I tried it out. I couldn't believe it -- I made something that my kids recognized! One thing led to another, and I learned how to make cows, and figured out cats, turtles, ducks, fish, aliens and most anything with a face.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I find my time at the torch to be the most enjoyable. I love to create the little critter faces. It wasn't what I set out to do, but it's become what I love.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable to describe your work, what would you choose and why?

Oh, fruity, for sure. Vegetables seem much more serious than what I do. You have to eat your veggies, but fruit is a treat.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be and why?

I would love to learn fused glass. I just think it's so pretty. Also, I think silver jewelry is just lovely, and that would be really great to know and work with, especially if I ever did make some fantastic focal bead that needed some shiny adornments.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I'd have to say I would want to convey humor and just plain fun through my craft.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Just go for it! I had never done anything artistic before this class, and I could not be happier. If there's something you want to learn, just try it. It's never to late!

I have always been interested in art and crafts. When I was a kid, I used to buy beads at the local sidewalk fairs and make jewelry and key chains. Later on I started making beaded animals. I started making real pieces of jewelry two years ago when I saw two beautiful components that stirred a desire in me to create a necklace out of them.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I design and make what I like. I accumulate a large amount of materials such as pendants and wire and miscellaneous beads, and I choose some items I like and make something with them. I wanted to make beautiful quality pieces of jewelry; the type that you cannot find at a department store.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

The most enjoyable part for me is shopping for supplies and turning my ideas into a reality. I often write down/attempt to sketch designs in many notebooks, and when I find the right items to make a particular design; how enjoyable that is!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

A lime; bold, casual, with a bit of flare. Why not wear pearls one day and gemstone chips the next?

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I have already been experimenting with collage work and photography, and I would love to incorporate these and expand on them to be included in my business. They are both endless and beautiful and unique.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Life is both spontaneous and beautiful; do not be afraid to be you.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Follow your dreams and never stop doing what you love, when it sometimes seems as though you can't go on. If you want to make your artwork your way of living, planning, organization, and patience are the key ingredients to something successful.

Welcome, Krisha and her Etsy shop "NEEDFUL THINGS"! Krisha's shop has a variety of items ranging from art dolls, jewelry, original photography, ACEO's and more. Most important is the fact that any item purchased from NEEDFUL THINGS....will result in a percentage going towards helping our four-legged friends who are in dire need of help. Be sure to visit Krisha's Animal Rescue Blog...I did and found it very informative and heart-warming! A lot of credit goes to anyone who helps out all the needy animals in this world!



What led you to start creating your art/craft?



I'm a journalist and write an animal-rescue blog, http://www.arkansasonline.com/rescue, for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. I wanted to find a way to contribute to a very special group of ladies at Out of the Woods Rescue. They go out into the rural parts of Arkansas where there is very little assistance for strays or abused animals. I didn't have a lot of time or money to give, so I decided to use my eclectic tastes and budding skills to relieve stress for me (playing with clay is a great way to blow off steam), and help out the rescue organization. The markup on the items in my shop is 25%, which is the percentage the animal rescue group gets. I just get the cost of the materials. My time is donated, but I don't know if I'd really call it a donation because it's such fun!



How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?



I was drawn to the magazine Art Doll Quarterly about five years ago. I find doll-making symbolic, primitive, spiritual. Memories come flooding back from when I was a child playing with my dolls, working out their stories as I create my dolls today. Immediately, I was drawn to clay because it's earthy. It somehow fits. If you believe in the Bible, Adam was formed of clay. Why shouldn't we form our own creations out of the same stuff? It's a difficult medium for me though. Drawing is my best artistic asset, but I keep coming back to clay, hoping that one day I will learn to master it.



What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?



I love creating the stories behind the works. My dolls always have stories. With my photography, it's the hunt for that beautiful photo of the day. With my magnets, I look for the funky, iconic and graphic. With my jewelry, it's picking out the components that go together. I just know which chain works with which pendant; at least it's obvious to me very quickly. I don't know if others would agree with my compositions. With my journals, I love the whole process: choosing the fabric, the book size, the special embellishments - always Swarovski crystals. With my sketches and artist's cards, I like the hunt for just what I want to express. I would imitate art I love - am thinking of doing it - but I'm chicken. So my creations are entirely original.



If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable to describe your work, what would you choose and why?



What an interesting question. I suppose I would choose a carrot because I love carrots, and they are a great inspiration for sculpture. Also, they grow deep in the earth but have fluffy lettuce hair. I remember plucking them from the garden as a child, and I loved it.



If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be and why?



Goodness, I already work with clay, photography, fabric, yarn, beads, crystals, silver, copper, micah powder... I guess glass. Yes, I'd love to learn how to create stained glass like Frank Lloyd Wright's designs.



What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?



I'd just like everyone to know that they are helping a cat or dog in need when they buy from me. I also want them to know everything I make is very personal and dear to me. I make everything with great care and improve with every piece I make.



What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?



My advice to other Etsians is to promote yourself, not just on Etsy but offline as well. Order some beautiful Moo mini cards - you won't want to give them away - but you can create a collage for your house or office. Believe in yourself, but don't be pushy. Most importantly, make what you love.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

My mom taught me to knit when I was 8, and I played with fibre sporadically until I got really serious a few years ago. My nephew’s birth inspired me to start knitting again, albeit mostly baby items, but I started designing almost as soon as I picked up the needles. I wasn’t thinking about selling at the time; so many ideas were flowing I didn’t know how to manage designing with output. So I spent a few years toying with the idea while still designing and churning out a few pieces for myself and family until I finally decided to give it a go.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

There wasn’t much other choice. I do sew a little, but knitting and felting are so much more forgiving. Knitting is a rhythmic, repetitive motion that entrances and helps to sooth and de-stress. If I’m going to have a second job, it’s going to be a (mostly) stress-free one!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Designing and experimenting come first for me. When the juices are flowing, the possibilities are endless.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Hmmm. Banana. It’s a staple, available year-round and affordable compared to its pricier counterparts.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Music is my first love. It evokes so many feelings and can convey innumerable messages. I’m never at a loss when trying to express myself musically, whether through singing, playing instruments or dancing.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

The handbag is the workhorse of my brand. I hope to show that knit and felted bags aren’t dowdy, unfashionable or out of touch. There are many wonderful designs out there that are functional as well as beautiful, and the workmanship put into this craft is well worth the price tag.

I'm happy to have Debbie of Serenity Collections as a "featured artist" out here on DZFANTASY! I just love this artist's beaded amulet bags! I'm thinking I might just have to get one for my very own! What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I first started selling my jewelry because doing it as a hobby, I was accumulating more than I could wear and I could not just keep buying beads for fun. Now I am trying to grow my business through my Etsy shop because I have become disabled, and can no longer work a regular job. Running my Etsy store not only will hopefully give me some income, but it makes me feel like I am still part of something. Being stuck, mostly at home, with no one around except my family is a bit strange after being in the work force, raising 2 kids by myself etc. Making friends on Etsy is a wonderful thing for me.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

During my teens I tried all kinds of crafts, drawing , painting, and mosaic work. I learned to knit and crochet and bead, I learned ceramics, actually earned my teaching certificate in ceramics, but the beading kept drawing me back. I would take up my knitting needles then go back to my beading needle, pick up a paintbrush then put it back for my beading needle, By the time I hit my 20's I knew beading was what I wanted to do.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

There are actually two parts to this. I love taking a tray with little piles of different color beads and ending up turning them all into one beautiful product, there is nothing more satisfying. I also like the way I can use my beading to get away. It does not matter what kind of day I have had, no matter how hard I worked or what went wrong or whatever has stressed me out, once I start working with my beads, my mind goes to a different place and everything else goes away leaving me peaceful and content while I work.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would that be and why?

I would choose a cluster of grapes on the vine. So simple, clean simple food. But look again, the subtle, deep colors, the glisten if they have dew, check out the drape of the leaves with all the differences in shape and how the vines curl so lazy and relaxed. My bags are so much deeper than a quick look, like a cluster of grapes.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be and why?

I love polymer clay, hope to become more skillful with it as I practice.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

My jewelry tells a story, just as all peices of jewelry or even a bead does. They are all made with a purpose, for a reason, with a plan in mind.

I took the following paragraph from Debbie's profile on Etsy, as I thought it was really special, and would like to help spread the word.

"I have also just started a new project for my granddaughter. She is out to save all of the animals in the world, and has made it her mission to do all she can. I make sequin ornaments along with my jewelry and sell them year round. 10% of every ornament I sell will be donated to a local chapter of ASPCA in my grandaughter's name and she will be taking responsibility for all areas of this project other than making the ornaments. I want to get this information out to everyone because it is an important project to her and she is very excited."

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

A friend of mine gave me a book that taught me how to make folded cards. Eventually I just combined that book with my love for scrapbooking. I've been making cards for a long time, but I just started selling them this summer.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I love to work with paper! Shopping at scrapbooking stores is one of my favorite things to do. It's so much fun to find great patterns and textures. My only complaint is that paper scraps are hard to store.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

My favorite part of cardmaking is sitting down and making three sets of cards right in a row. It is very relaxing for me. I don't know what it is, it's just such a peaceful thing for me to do. I usually just put in a good movie or CD and start working.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable to describe your art/craft, what would you choose and why?

My work is like an apple. It's crisp and clear but also sweet!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be and why?

I've tried watercolors before. It'd be fun to try making some pretty cards using that skill. I don't think I'd be able to compete with the fantastic artists on Etsy, though!

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

The message I convey with my craft is simply "hello". I love the warm fuzzy feeling I get when I send (or receive) a card. That's how I want people to feel when they get one of my cards.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

The biggest lesson I have learned so far is to keep it simple. Too often I get carried away with paper and ribbon and buttons. Many times I've had to remind myself that just because something matches perfectly doesn't mean it has to go on the card! I'm not sure if this applies to every craft, but it's certainly true for me.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

My mom taught me to knit about 3 years ago. I'd been wanting to learn for a few years prior to that, but had been very intimidated by the whole thing. Since then, I've been knitting obsessively, for myself, for gifts, and since last year, for sale in my Etsy shop.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Knitting is about the only thing that is enjoyable and relaxing enough for me that I want to do it all the time. I've met a lot of great people through my local fiber artists guild and online networking, and keep getting turned on to new things to do with fiber. I'm basically going deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole, and I love it! Knitting led to needle-felting and spinning, and next up for me will be dyeing fiber.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

The tactile experience of fiber and yarn is a big one. It is so satisfying to squish a brand new ball of yarn or a fluffy bunch of spinning fiber. Also, I really love being able to make something functional and beautiful out of what is basically string! I can't wait to get into playing with color, as I learn to dye fiber!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

I'd say an heirloom tomato. I had the pleasure of trying these recently, and they are so flavorful and amazing! I thought, “this is what a tomato is supposed to taste like!” In the sea of mass-produced and generic “stuff” out there, I would hope that my work (and all the wonderful handmade work available on Etsy) would stand out as “the real deal”.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Well, I'm also a musician - I guess that's a creative medium. I've loved singing since I was a child, and I've been playing flute and guitar for about 14 and 12 years respectively. I love to write music and perform in coffee shops and such, usually with my brother (who is also a very talented musician). We teach guitar lessons out of our homes and dream of opening a music center someday.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I guess I just want to help add weight and momentum to this whole "Handmade Movement" - to show people the value in handmade crafts and the individual, as opposed to rock bottom prices and the corporations. I’ve made some great connections with other artists on Etsy and elsewhere online, and I’m so excited to see people who support and encourage each other instead of viewing each other as “competition”. It allows us all to breathe a little easier and not feel like we have to watch our backs all the time. I’m also big on being mindful of my impact on the world and the environment, which is why I make a point of finding environmentally friendly and humane sources for my wool and materials wherever possible.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Be true to yourself and do what you enjoy. Don’t try to get in on the fads at the expense of creating what you really love, because that will show in your work. Do what you love, take stellar photos and promote your work well… and the customers who will appreciate you will find you. Also, reach out and get to know others involved in your particular craft! They can be a huge source of support, information and inspiration.

What led you to start creating your art/craft

I don’t think there was anything in particular, but for as long as I can remember I have always leaned heavily to the artistic side of life. My parents were big influences. My Mum because she used to hand sew all the costumes I needed for Tap and Ballet recitals. Money was not abundant in our family, but I always relished the trips we made to the fabric store where Mum would have an eye for picking out a fabric from the sale bin and making it into something wonderful. My Dad turned his photography hobby into a career later in life. This was well before the age of digital cameras, and I remember spending hours in the red glow of the darkroom watching him making photos – I thought it was a truly magical experience.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I’m not sure I have decided! I love exploring all mediums and the only thing that limits me is trying to persuade my Husband to give up yet another corner of the house! My favourite mediums are those that have some unpredictability to them, where you can guide the outcome but not dictate it, so there are always some surprises (some good, some not so good, some incredible!). My two current favourites are wet felting and photography (not set-up, digitally manipulated photography, more the spontaneous, street photography variety).

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

That’s tough to say, I enjoy all aspects. However, I would say the most frustrating is having an idea and not being able to translate it into reality. I carry ideas around in my head for years sometimes before I figure out a way to bring them to life.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Definitely a pomegranate, it is full of hundreds of little juicy seeds, each one in it’s own unique compartment, but related to each other. It mirrors the many ideas I always have for any one concept!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Music. There are so many different genres to explore and each one invokes a different emotion to each individual person.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I like to think my pieces draw an emotional reaction, but I don't want to dictate what that might be. I find it really interesting to see the different messages that each individual draws from the same piece.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters? Listen to your heart.

Nurture ideas to their fullest. Experiment. Don’t go anywhere without a pen and scrap of paper!

Deborah is a part-time art teacher, and artist who lives in Des Moines, Iowa. I'm happy to have Deborah and her creations out here on DZFANTASY as a "featured artist". After learning a bit about Deborah and her unique designs, be sure to visit her Etsy shop - AISLE 3 STUDIO.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I've loved Art ever since I was a little kid watching my dad draw with chalk pastels in his makeshift studio in the garage. I took classes throughout school in ceramics, photography, metals, painting...you name it, I took an art class in it! I became an Art Teacher and maintained my love for creating! I'm always trying to do something different and unique that is funky yet functional. Really, I'm aware that my art can be a little weird but I create mostly for me and hope that someone else out there will like it too.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Being an Art Teacher, like every other Art Teacher I know, naturally, I find it difficult to stick with one medium and one way of doing something. When I chose to start selling on Etsy I wanted to do a couple of things; 1. do something different, and 2. use recycled materials. While living in Northern Virginia, I began making these photo sculptures that used textures and colors. When I looked at my cereal box every morning, I began seeing textures and colors! I came up with a system that would make the petals I cut sturdy enough to form a functioning bowl or wall hanging.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I love feeling innovative. Lets face it, we live in a world where most of the time people are praised for following directions and going mainstream. I feel lucky that my job encourages my creative side to shine. I'm inspired by my students when they create something new and feel so accomplished. I love taking that inspiration home with me and putting that energy into becoming innovative in my own Art!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Hmm, I would have to say a Pineapple! It just so happens to be my favorite fruit, but is also pointy on the outside, like the edges of my sculptures and has a bold sweet flavor inside.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Ceramics, totally! One day I would love to open my own ceramics studio. I just love the feel of clay and all you can do with it. I toured a pottery studio when I was in Atlanta visiting Amnieva (also on Etsy), and just loved the atmosphere in this studio. Clay was everywhere, people were throwing pottery. It's such a flexible material. I tend to think 3 Dimensionally so I love ceramics.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I want to show my ability to see the beauty in everyday things that others might not have ever considered. I also want to show that you can still be an Artist and a creative individual when using recycled materials.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Do what YOU like, not what you THINK others will like. I have made some serious crap trying to come up with what I thought others would want to buy. The thing is, that's never going to work or make you happy. I think people can tell if you like what you do or make. It shows in your work.

LORI'S - "He's a Screamer"

OK, Lori...we all want to hear your thoughts and ideas!

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

Well at the tender age of six, my dad brought home a little yellow tub with a red top on it. I excitedly opened up this new present, and the wonderful aroma of play dough filled the air… and I was hooked ever since.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I have crazy dreams that have crazy things in them, and clay was the best way to make them a reality.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Working with my best friend on “clay dates”. Also, being able to put the ideas in my head, into my hand.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Tomato! It’s seen as both! I’m a rebel and still put it in the vegetable drawer in the fridge…Also Megan and I have very different artistic styles, we are a little of both. We are a little Fruity and always good for the soul.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Silly putty … it keeps going and going and going… bounces good and not so major if it hits you in the eye…. On a serious note I’d like to try T-shirt screening. Megan and I are playing with it a little bit… If our clay things are off the wall I can’t wait to see what we come up with to print, stay tuned for those little Gems!

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Do not, I repeat, do not get clay in your eye! And nothing is impossible with clay!

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Keep an idea book with you ALL the TIME! Most of my ideas come from crazy dreams I have or really random thoughts, if I don’t write them down I forget all about them.
