A "WHIMSICAL KNITTING" FAIRY!

WHIMSICAL "KNITTING" FAIRY
my newest creation

I've beeen working on this delightful knitting fairy for the last several days before I finally finished her today!! You wouldn't believe how long it took me to knit the start of the teeny, tiny scarf using the pair of needles I made for her. Did you ever try to knit with tiny toothpick needles!! I must say...it was quite a challenge!


I also made her the tiny knitting bag with the Swarovski crystal handle, so she could put her balls of yarn in there for safe keeping as she knits. The bag is fabric, which I then hand-painted a sparkling lavender color, and added the Swarovski crystal handle. A very magical bag, perfect for a fairy knitter!

Her bag can be displayed as show in the above photo, or you can set it up on the box next to the fairy!

The fairy comes sitting on the wooden, hand-painted "keepsake" box, and the box's handle supports the fairy sitting on the box. The fairy is NOT attached to the box, but needs to be displayed sitting on the box.

The box makes a wonderful little "keepsake" box, where you can store your treasures with the fairy as guardian! Below is a photo of the inside of the box. I created a tiny cushion for the inside of the box, using the same fabric as the fairy's body/wings.

She was such fun to design and create, and she is hoping she will find a good home in which to spread her fairy magic.

" WEAR A FAIRY" FUN, COLORFUL, FAIRY FACE PINS

WEAR A FAIRY FACE PIN

I've been designing and creating these whimsical "fairy face" pins for almost 10 years now, and each one always ends up with her own unique face and personality! They make great conversation pieces, and the wearer is sure to receive a lot of compliments! I've had customers come back a couple years later, after having bought a pin or two at an art show, to tell me about all the compliments and comments they receive. I'd thought I'd share a few of the little fairies I now have available in my Etsy shop. They will all be going to an art show with me this weekend, so if you see one you like, you better grab her! They are colorful and fun to look at, and make unique, affordable gifts.

This colorful little fairy face has the most fun hairdo...it is an Italian yarn with all kinds of texture to it....loops, and poofs with a sparkle!

Swarovski crystals as her accents. A truly fun, accent for any outfit!

Now isn't she a "wild child" with her funky, multi-colored hairdo.

She is wearing a gold plated, filigree leaf charm with a teeny, tiny bumblebee dangling from it, and several Swarovski crystals at the top of the leaf .

I think of her as a little "blue bell" fairy face. She has a loopy, curly hairdo designed from an Italian yarn and it is accented witha silver plated leaf charm and Swarovski crystals

SO SWEET describes this little fairy face...with her deep mauve hairdo, which has a bit of sparkle to it. She is wearing a silk rose colored flower in her hair, which I accented with several Swarovski crystals

She is just one "glistening" little fairy with her sparkly AURA yarn hairdo, with Swarovski crystals as accents.

A VERY magical little fairy, you can wear whereever you go!

This little "green haired" fairy face is a bit more subdued then my usual wild haired creations. She has a very sweet little face! Her hairdo was designed from a soft, wispy Italian yarn which has bits of ribbon running through it. Her accent is a Swarovski crystal bead in silver, and several other Swarovski crystals.

MEET MY "FAIRY PRINCESS"

I can't believe I managed to finish her, as I've been very busy getting together a huge list of more Etsy artists, who will be featured out here in the coming weeks. I just finished her today, and thought I'd bring her out here, so you can see what else I've been up to.

She was such fun to create, and is full of sparkle! She is wearing a lot of Swarovski crystals, and even has one in her "belly button". She has butterfly shaped wings, and measures 4" tall from her "seat" to the top of her fluffy hairdo! I hope she finds a good home before I get too attached to her!

Just look at this beautiful butterfly!! I hope you enjoy reading the interview of this artist, and am very happy to feature her here. The beaded butterfly was one of her favorite items in her shop. Read below to see what she has to say about this work of art!

We live in the middle of 70 acres in Northwest Arkansas and these lovely butterflies flutter around our herb garden all summer. Their favorite host plants for their young is any member of the fennel family. We make sure that we have fennel in our garden just for the catapillars to munch on. They are such gorgeous butterflies that I had to try and create one to remind me of the beauty they give us every year! This butterfly was created with more than 1500 beads.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

My mother was very talented at sewing and crafting and I inherited her need to create. I love the outdoors and nature in all her splendor is my inspiration?

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I love to use different mediums to create and still haven't chosen just one!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Creating a beautiful item that reflects nature!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

It would have to be an artichoke. Because an artichoke has so many layers and so does my art. I do not stick to one type of art/craft, and each item that I make reveals a different layer of my personality.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Silversmithing, I would love to learn that medium because it has such versatility!

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

You should honor the world of nature and strive to understand it.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Follow your heart and create what you love!

MEET MY NEWEST MERMAID!

This little mermaid is my newest creation, and I just finished her today! I was so delighted with her, that I thought she deserved to have her photo out here.

She was just 6.5" tall before sculpting her into her current, permanent sitting position. These tiny little mermaids are very hard to work with, and to get them to sit, through the use of wire armatures in her tail and arms, takes a bit of doing! Sitting, she measures just about 4.5" tall from her "seat" to the top of her fluffy hairdo. Her fins span approximately 5" wide.

I used a shimmery dark teal fabric for her tail. When using a silky textured fabric such as this, it is necessary to use iron on interfacing on both sides of the fabric, to give it more strength. Her upper body and face are 100% silk tussah fabric. Tussah silk comes from wild moths whose's main diet is oak leaves. It is the amount of tannin in the leaves that determines the silk's natural color. Tussah silk can vary from a light beige (this is what I have used for this mermaid) to a darker tan color. Tussah silk is getting very hard to find, and keeps going up in price. The lowest price I've found so far is $15.00 per yard, and it can go as high as $40.00 per yard depending on the supplier. Her face, of course, has been individually hand-drawn, needle-sculpted, and hand-painted. I use a Micron .005 pen for the features, and acrylic paints for the eyes and lips. Her little face is approximately .75" long, and .50" wide. I can't get much smaller than that and get a good face.

Her wild hairdo was designed from a unique textured Italian yarn with wisps and poofs in it, accented with a metallic thread running through this yarn. I added another yarn call AURA, which makes her sparkle even more.

Her accents are all hand-sewn onto her, using a 4# test, clear fishing line. She has a Swarovski crystal belly button, necklace and her waist is also decorated with Swarovski crystals, and a real sea shell.

She is sculpted so that she can sit all by herself.

Hi! I'm Lois! I'm a retired elementary school teacher, and proud of it! Art is my PASSION! (Second only to love and laughter!) I became obsessed with pottery about twenty years ago. Now I have an art studio in my VERY PINK HOUSE, and a kiln in the back shed. I sell my work at galleries in the area and local shows. I especially love making whimsical items, and specialize in mermaids and water related pieces. Recently, I've added cats to my repetoire. They're way fun!

What led you to start creating your art?
I guess I just loved it; was drawn to it! I started doing art as a child- drawing, painting, and creating multi-media pieces. I also took art classes as I was growing up, and then continued after I'd gotten my degree to teach elementary school, plus a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education. I was given incentive to make a higher salary by taking 60 credits past my Master's Degree. I did it all in art, including getting certification to teach art.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
That's tough because I love it all! But once I started working with clay, it seemed to have more possibilities, and I became obsessed with tons of ideas I wanted to explore! I felt there'd never be enough time to try all the things I was imagining!

What aspect of creating your art do you find the most enjoyable?
There are no rules! The imagination and creativity have no bounds. One thing leads you to another, moving you in new directions, causing you to grow and change. With change, there is excitment, and feeling good about oneself for each success at having found a new place.

If you had to choose a fruit or a vegetable to describe your work, what would it be and why?
Probably an onion. I don't eat them much, but they are layered and can be pulled apart, revealing yet other layers as is true with the exploration I experience over a period of time with my work.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art?
That life is fun and full of possibilities. That it's OK and good to be different and original, and show who and what really makes you tick. That ALL human beings need to , and should, express themselves artistically, be it with music, dance, writing, whatever, with no concern as to whether or not they do it "well". It is the emotion behind it and the process that truly matters! Let out your feelings! It's healthy and theraputic!

What advice do you have for other artists?
Do it! As a hobby or a career, for yourself or for others, but just DO IT!

This is the smallest of my "wall" style mermaids. She measures 6.5" tall, and her tail fin span is 5". Her upper body and face are 100% silk fabric. I individually hand-drew, needle-sculpted and hand-painted her face. Her eyes and lips have a coat of crystal clear lacquer which gives her a very "life-like" look and shine.

Her tail fabric is a quality batik fabric in shades of aqua. She has a lovely, long flowing hairdo, which I designed out of two different Italian yarns. One is a soft, wispy "eyelash" style yarn, and the other is a sparkling/glistening yarn, which makes her look as if she just come out of the sea!

Her accents are real sea shells in her hair, necklace and waist accent, along with Swarovski crystals, and tiny glass seed beads. She has a loop on the back of her neck for either hanging on the wall, or to dance from a bit of clear fishing line or ribbon. She may also be displayed standing on a shelf, if she leans against something or is tacked to the wall. She is NOT freestanding. You may also move her arms up or down a bit, as well as her tail fins.

Hello! I'm a Brit artist who's really Chinese, originally from Cambodia, lived in Hong Kong, Thailand, Lau, Maco, now living in the UK with my lovely muscian husband for nearly 10 years.


What led you to start creating your art?
I have always had a strong passion for art ever since I was able to pick up my first pencil as a child. After ten years of working and living just to pay bills, and not living the life I always dreamed of, I finally decided to leave my full time job to be a full time freelance illustrator, and try to make my dream come true for myself. Last November, I was lucky and found Etsy!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
It is based on the environment in which I live, I live in a small place and have little time for art and creating, so I chose coloured pencils for my main medium because it is easy to handle within the limited space I have. In addition, it has allowed me to draw anytime when I can. I love to use a watercolour paper mixed with coloured pencils, which makes for a very great texture.

What aspect of creating your art do you find the most enjoyable?
I enjoy every single moment for creative from the research to complete it. It makes me feel I am alive again.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art, what would you choose, and why?
I would choose fruit--- the tropical fruit. It is colourful, attractive, warm, sweet and feels like sunshine.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art?
I convey my dreams and emotions into my pieces. I enjoy designing characters with surreal gestures in extraordinary scenes that I could be in. By creating my own atmosphere, I aim to make people feel relaxed, smile and forget all the worries they have in the real world and bring them into a fantasy.

What advice do you have for other artists?
Don’t give up your dream, we only live once, do what you want for yourself, and be proud of yourself.

Mermaid on Real Sugar Starfish

Tiny Fiber Sculpted MERMAID on SUGAR STARFISH!

Lately, the mermaids have been calling to me!!! Here is my latest mermaid creation...! She is permanently attached to a real sugar starfish, and is offering her gifts from the sea! Designing and creating a tiny sitting mermaid like this takes many more hours than my tiny wall style mermaids.

Through the use of inner wire armatures, I finally manged to get her in just the right pose, so that she could be permanently cemented to the starfish. Since there wasn't any way to "clamp" her to the starfish, while the cement dryed...I had to sit and hold her to the starfish for about 25 minutes! I really must try and find a better of doing that!

She is full of fun and has a colorful, glistening Italian yarn hairdo, which I accented with a crown designed of Swarovski crystals and reall sea shells. She also has a waist accent of Swarovski crystals, and real sea shells, as well as a crystal necklace, belly button, and crystals in the upper portion of her tail. She is holding an offering of sea shells, glass fish bead, and Swarovski crystals.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - FAIRY NANA a.k.a Eve Reddin Lennon

Now, doesn't this delightful, exquisite fairy outfit just make you wish you could be a fairy and flit around in it....! It did me!! I met FAIRY NANA when she sent me a convo, expressing how much she loved one of my fairies in my DZFANTASY shop. Well I just had to take a look at her shop, and was in awe when I saw her delightful creations!! Each one is more exquisite than the next one. Now if I were a fairy, I'd have to have at least several of these gorgeous creations.
I'm so happy FAIRY NANA agreed to take the time to tell us about herself, her creations, and what got her started. Please read below to hear, in FAIRY NANA's own words what she has to say.

What led you to start creating your art?

It was the “silver Lining” following a stroke. ( I have CNS Lupus) I’d lost the fine motor skills in my right hand, and a physical therapist gave me a stack of felt square ,a large needle and thread, telling me my homework was to sew lines across each piece. I told her I couldn’t sew, but she insisted, so eventually I managed. It soon became boring, so I moved on to felt flowers at which point my granddaughter requested a princess skirt for her birthday party. YIKES! Eventually I managed a rudimentary tulle princess skirt for her, but I kept working on princess and fairy skirts until I felt they were “good enough” to pass muster. I ended up donating them to the Make A Wish Foundation – something I continue doing every month.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I didn’t really. I had already been a painter and lost the ability with a series of strokes. Sewing and the medium of fabric came after I had to “reinvent” myself.

What aspect of creating your art do you find the most enjoyable?

There are many – but perhaps the most precious is that I know that once someone puts my finished costume on – no matter what troubles she may have been dealing with, and no matter how she may have been feeling about herself, she will twirl around and feel beautiful , empowered, special, and absolutely as if she can make something magical happen in her life. It is almost as if I can impart a little bit of the feeling of “anything is possible” through a simple costume. I have no idea why – but when someone puts on one of these costumes they ALWAYS smile!!!!

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art?

That every girl – no matter what her age and no matter what is going on in her life – she is wonderful, unique, and beautiful – and that there is tremendous power in that.

What advice do you have for other artists?

Be true to yourself….and respect others as well as yourself.

THE BIRTH OF A MERMAID

Mermaids have fascinated mankind down through the ages...! I think it is always fun to see all the different styles and mediums used by artists to create mermaids. My mermaids are colorful, whimsical creatures, which I design and create entirely out of fabric. I hand-draw, needle-sculpt, and hand-paint each face individually.

Here I will try to show you several of the steps involved in creating one of my smallest mermaids. She is only 6.5" tall. Her fin span is 5". The upper bodies of all my mermaids are 100% silk tussah fabric. Tussah silk is a silk derived from wild moths, whose main diet is oak leaves. The amount of tannin in the leaves determines the natural color of the silk.

Below is a photo showing my original template ( I tend to scribble on them to get my pens started) for the upper body, along with the the fabric and the upper body drawn onto the top side of the fabric. I use a very thin interfacing which I iron onto the silk fabric. It is on this side, that I trace the pattern. The interfacing allows me to draw the pattern without actually drawing onto the silk. It also provides a stronger piece of fabric. A lot of stress is put onto the fabric when stuffing. I also use the smallest size stitch on my machine to actually sew the body pieces.

In the photo below you will see the 3 parts that make up this tiny little mermaid...her tail was created from a batik fabric. The tail fins were first stuffed lightly with acrylic fiberfill. I then top-stitch a design on the fins. Next, I insert fabric coated floral wire into the sections of the fins, so that when she is finished you can bend them up or down a bit. After the floral wire is in, I clip it so that the wires reach about .75" below the waist opening. I then finish stuffing the rest of the tail. That is what you are now seeing in the photo below.

The upper portion of the body has been cut, sewn and firmly stuffed with acrylic fiberfill up to about the waist. The next step is to insert the upper body portion into the top of the tail. Her head has been sewn and stuffed with fiberfil, and will be added to the body later.The photo above shows the top opening of the tail. This is the hard part...getting the little upper body to fit perfectly into the top of the tail, and hold it there while I hand-sew it into place using clear fishing line.
OK...now the body is attached at the waist!! Next step is deciding what yarns I want to use for her waist accent and hairdo. For this little mermaid, I've used 4 different yarns.. 3 "eyelash" style yarns in various shades of green, and a sparkly yarn that will make her glisten, as if she just came out of the sea!

The next step will be to give our little mermaid a belly button, and sew a Swarovski crystal into the center of it. Then I will finish up with the stuffing of her upper body. She will have fabric coated floral wire armatures in her arms, so that these also may be bent up or down a bit......!

WELCOME BACK....to The Birth of A Mermaid

We now find our little mermaid with her Swarovski crystal belly button in place, and her upper body firmaly stuffed.

The next step was attaching her head to her body as shown in the photo above. At this point, I then decide what she will be wearing for her accessories and accents.

Now our little mermaid is starting to come to life...and you can see her below with all her accessories/accents, which are all hand-sewn onto the mermaid using a 2mm clear fishing line. Her necklace is sewn onto the body so that you can not see the stitching at all!

She is wearing a necklace which I designed using 4mm Swarovski crystals, and real little sea shells strung on colored wire. She also has crystals and sea shells sewn at her waist.

Now comes the best part....I love creating the faces, which is when each creation takes on its own little personality....!

COME BACK TO SEE HER FINALLY COME TO LIFE!

Tues, May 3rd: We are now back to see the final steps taken before the little mermaid "came to life". Below is a photo of the needle sculpting of her face: I start at the bridge of the nose, work down, create her nostrils, and than go into the corner of the mouth, and up to the outer edge of the eye.

I have several other tutorials out here which show the steps I take to create the faces, so have decided not to show each step here. After the face is sculpted, I hand-paint the eyes and lips using acrylic paint. The eyelash are applied using a Micron pen size .005. The eyes and lips then get a coat of crystal clear 3D lacquer by Sakura, which gives the faces a very "life-like" look and shine. The face is also sprayed with a matte finish sealer by Krylon, so it will not run or smear.

Her face is 100% silk, which I hand-drew, needle-sculpted, and hand-painted. Her arms and wings have inner wire armatures so that you may bend them a bit.. She is designed to hang on the wall, or to dangle from a bit of ribbon or clear fishing line. There is a loop on the back of her neck for this purpose. Her body wing fabric is one of Laurel Burch's whimsical designs. She is accented with Swarovski crystals, and colorful glass seed beads. Her hairdo was designed from a wonderful Italian designer yarn, with a texture of wisps and colorful loops.

This tiny fairy is NOT suitable for children to play with....it is great however, to decorate their rooms. There are too many tiny accents on the fairy to be safe for children under age 8.
