I'm delighted to feature Leanna TenEycke and her Etsy shop - BY THE OAK ART here on my DZFANTASY blog.  Being a fantasy artist myself, it is always fun to see and learn about other fantasy artists and their creations.

1. What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I have always been in love with the fantasy genre and had a strong interest in drawing, and when I was a young girl decided I wanted to be an illustrator or artist in some form. I was very fortunate to have my family give me a lot of support, encouragement, and send me to art classes. I tried out many painting mediums including both traditional and digital, sculpture and doll making, sewing, and jewelry making but my main focus has been on digital painting. It was in April that I decided to try combining my artwork with jewelry to make wearable art.

2. How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Digital is my favourite medium because I can freely create and experiment without being conscious of how much material I am using. I always have complete control and freedom of my canvas, and I don't see it as a crutch or feel shame in using that freedom.

3. What aspect of creating your art, do you find the most fascinating?

When I have a particularly fun project to work on, or an idea that I really need to bring to life, it is work but sometimes it doesn't feel like it. I can spend hours assembling jewelry pieces or working on a new painting and the time flies by. Though this is definitely not always the case! Sometimes it can be very frustrating, but always worth it in the end because everything is a learning experience.

4. If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art, what would you choose, and why?

I would like to say tomato, because beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, but I believe the cherry best represents my work. I love to use reds, and cherries are small but have very feminine flowering trees.

5. If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I would like to paint full sized in oil someday. There's just a different feeling standing in front of a large painting, and I find the medium very fun to work with.

6. What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art?

I try to tell a story, describe the culture and emotions of a character, or depict a dream-like environment to let the viewer's imagination wander.

7. What advice do you have for other artists?

Be proud when you create something you think is beautiful, be accepting of helpful criticism, treat your customers or clients kindly, and always strive to improve yourself.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I am a mom of twin girls. After the first year of being home, I started getting cravings to express myself once again and be creative through art.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I have a background in printmaking, monotypes to be exact. While I love that, I started thinking about a medium that would be a little less messy, and more versatile. Years ago I was asked to demo polymer clay in a workshop for kids. I enjoyed the brief ‘encounter’ I had with it then, so started doing some research. That led me to NJPCG (New Jersey Polymer Clay Guild). I went to my first meeting, and have been hooked ever since.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?
 
I would have to say the experimental aspect. Most of the time I sit down with a piece of clay and begin on the journey towards my destination. Yet there are times I get sidetracked. For example, if I am mixing up color, and it suddenly looks like an amazing piece of agate, I stop there. I also really enjoy doing pattern transfers onto clay. I simply can’t resist French damask…most of my items in my new shop are just that. It’s very enjoyable to be in the moment, and working with clay helps me achieve that.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?


What an interesting question! I would have to say a tomato. Why? Tomatoes have culinary versatility. A tomato can be used a wide variety of ways. Ex. in a sandwich, a rich marinara, the base for a spicy salsa, etc. It’s the same with polymer clay. There are countless examples of different methods and results that polyclay artists use to create some real visual masterpieces.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I think I would like to explore the world of textiles. I love patterns, rich colors…, luxurious fabrics. Oddly enough I don’t sew. Maybe in another life, can’t imagine there’s enough time in this one!

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Beauty is created by combining juxtaposing elements. (ex. old and new, shabby and chic.) Also, I like thinking outside the box, and doing things differently. Locks of Pizazz was created to address a void that I see in womens accessories; pretty hair jewelry. My pieces are very unique AND affordable. Gotta love that ‘opposing’ combination!
 
What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

I think back to high school. The class the kids would sign up for the easy “A” was always art. For those of us who pursue it as our vocation however know differently! It takes courage to do your art or craft and put it on display for all to see. My advice is to be courageous. Believe in yourself. Keep fine tuning your talents. Look at trends for inspiration but don’t get bound by them. Strive to find a niche. Work hard and have fun!

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

About 20 years ago, I was fascinated with the Native American beadwork I had seen in a museum while visiting the Pine Ridge & Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. When I returned home, I found a book about beaded earrings by Deon De Lange (may not have spelled her name correctly). It just went from there!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I knew from the start I wanted to work with beads to make jewelry, the smaller the better at the time. Since then I enjoy many types of beads, stones and pearls, along with various techniques, in my jewelry designs.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

All of it! But a favorite that I get lost in is the design process. Especially how a design can change from my original idea into something so completely different by the time I’m finished!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

I never thought about my work in these terms. How about red, green and yellow apples, because apples are so versatile and tasty in many different dishes. My work tends to reflect many styles and “themes”, casual to dressy, and in between.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Photography. There is much about life that isn’t noticed as I go about my daily living, until I pick up a camera. At that moment, life looks different! I see different! I enjoy focusing on the details of everyday life.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I have a jewelry collection entitled “Love, Peace & Unity” that I hope opens people’s minds to the possibility that the idea of being one with the world, with each other, regardless of race or religion, is attainable.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Be true to your passion for art and don’t allow “life” to put stumbling blocks in the path of your creativity.

Patricia of VERRE DESIGN on Etsy is a talented jewelry and glass artist, from Quebec, who has some very exquisite creations in her shop. I find the creation of lampwork beads very fascinating, and love how they look, so I'm very happy to have Patricia as a featured artist out here on DZFANTASY.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

Glassblowing always fascinated me. Encased pieces are almost mesmerizing... I started melting glass as a hobby that soon became a passion. I’ve also always loved original handmade silver jewelry. Incorporating some of my handmade beads into my designs sort of came naturally.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I don’t think I ever decided... It was just “it”!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I love each part of it! I love the “zen” state I’m in when I melt glass, the concentration and attention it requires, the different textures and feels each color have, the planning it sometimes requires to make a specific design or achieve a certain effect. And I love designing jewelry, selecting components, working with silver wire and silver clay... coordinating it all to create unique and original pieces. And the smile on my face when I just get it right!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Avocado – For its mysterious center, its soft, smooth and silky texture, its vibrant and changing color, it’s sublime look (and taste) just by itself or the great combination it makes with other ingredients.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be, and why?

I love writing and cooking and to make my own gift cards... but I will say sculpture – to uncover and touch the angels hidden in marble.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
Accessories make the look – wear what you like and what makes you feel good.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Be passionate, curious and try different things. Remember that practice makes perfect and to train your creativity muscle every day. “Whether you believe you can make it or not, you’re probably right”. Find joy in creating.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?


During my teens, I really loved to wear jewelry and I remember one time buying a pair of earrings and knowing deep inside that one day I'd make jewelry myself.


How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?


I've painted ever since I can remember, and I take photographs, and also make jewelry. I think it’s the need to feel the material with my hands that led me to put the emphasis on jewelry, plus the joy in doing something and seeing it brings happiness to someone else.


What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?


I love the moment an idea is showing itself in my mind's eye, I love that exciting moment… inspiration I think its called.


If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?


I would choose Artichoke! I don't know why, but it’s the first association that came to me.


If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?


Aside from photography, I think it would be sculpturing, because of the feel of the material.


What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?


I hope the world will forgive me for not thinking about it. I don't think about my art, I just bring it out.


What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?


I think the best advice is the one I got – DO ! Just keep on doing, and follow your heart. The rest will follow.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I have been a creative person since I could remember. I started with painting, and as I got older my creativity has kind of taken a life of its own. I still love painting, but I have added sewing and of course jewelry making to my list of things that make me truly happy.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

When it comes to jewelry, beautiful natural stones that catch my eye are what I am all about. I absolutely love working with drusies, and hand cut faceted stones. These stones are so beautiful in nature; I find them to be the most interesting in a semi natural form.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

To me it is amazing to take a single, semi precious stone and combine with elements that when finished create a piece of wearable art that demands attention. I love having a pile of items that I have no plan for, I usually throw them all in a pile and the design comes to me on how they will be arranged.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

The first thing that comes to mind I guess would be an Artichoke, why you ask? Well, an artichoke is a vegetable that not everyone has the taste for, but the people that do like them, absolutely love them! Besides if you were to connect a beautiful copper chain to an artichoke, I could make a necklace out of that.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Other than jewelry, my favorite way to express myself is oil painting. You are able to start with a blank white canvas, and by the time you finish you can have an entire story on the canvas in front of you.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

That natural and unique combined are the most beautiful expression there is.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

If you love doing it then do it. "Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved." William Jennings Bryan

What led you to start creating your art/craftI have always loved arts?

When I was younger, I looked for different ways to express myself: painting, music, etc. One day, three years ago, I started making my own jewelry. Simple designs with wood beads, glass beads and silver. Many people showed interest in them and that encouraged me to go further. I learned new techniques, and I improved my old ones. Later, I included new materials in my work (like Swarovski crystals or Italian crystals) and I got a great response from my buyers. Two months ago, I joined Etsy. I have many ideas and projects for the future, and I hope they will become true.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

People always told me I had an eye for jewels and picking colors. At first, I made very simple designs with very basic materials. I got excited with my first results, so I worked hard to learn new techniques. These techniques allowed me to work with better materials, like Italian crystals or natural gems. My favorite material is the Swarovski crystal.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Mixing different pieces and obtaining very surprising combinations. I love creating new shapes with hearts, flowers, butterflies,…A great feeling surrounds me when I create something someone considers special, something “unique” for them. I also love when I can combine my ideas with the ideas of more people. I have made a lot of custom orders through these years and I find them very interesting and funny too.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

A cherry, because it looks beautiful, but it also tastes very good. It is not just appearance. I want to make beautiful jewelry, but I also want it to be of a high quality.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Music. I studied piano and I used to sing. Moreover, my grandmother was a professional singer. It´s a perfect medium to evoke deep feelings.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

With my jewelry, I try to show creativity and colorful ideas. The world can be dark sometimes, but we can make it a little brighter.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

If you like what you do, keep working on it. Don´t worry about the sales, and make your art with dedication and passion. Sooner or later, people will recognize your efforts.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I started as a stained glass artist. While working on stained glass, I became interested in working with metals which led into making jewelry. Now making jewelry is my primary passion.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I like working with metal and with jewelry, but your choice of metals are somewhat limited. Gold is too expensive; copper, I like to work with, but it oxidizes; so the most practical one for me is Silver. I may still go back and give copper another try.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Trials and errors to find solutions so that the outcome is like what I have in mind, or something I am pleased with. A lot of time, I start with an idea and thru trial and error the end product is something I am proud of, but not necessarily what I started with. Sometimes I start without any idea at all and I let the metal or the wire tell me where I should go next.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

I have to say ‘Ugly Fruit’. It is called ugly, it looks like an unripe orange, but you are in for a treat, if you are willing to try it. Raw materials for my craft are not pretty at all, and it takes a lot of time and effort to bring out the hidden potential and shine, just like an Ugly fruit, you have to cut into it and be trusting.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be, and why?

I have already tried, painting, color pencil and watercolor and stained glass and I like them both. But I have to say, I prefer Stained glass. Both the glass and metal have a mind of their own, which creates interesting problems and challenges.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I don’t have a special message; I just want to make people feel good.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Be patient and don’t give up.

Welcome, Terezia also know as .t, whose shop on Etsy is called Three Kisses xxx. If you will read below you will find out from Terezia how her shop name came about, and you will also hear what she has to say about her lovely creations. The following paragraph was taken from Terezia's Profile on Etsy, and will explain why all words begin in lower case letters. OK, .t, let's learn a little bit about you!

My name is terezia and i am from slovakia. i have been living in germany and england for some years, but now i am back in my home country and that`s where i create my work. one of my friends mic christopher, great singer and songwriter, who unfortunately is not with us anymore, used to call me t. also some friends of mine in england found it difficult to pronounce terezia, my name got shortened to just t and i like to spell it with a dot in front, and because i love to write without capital letters i simply use “.t” and a short story about my label three kisses xxx: i like the way of finishing letters with kisses, but because it's not used in slovakia, i added in full words what those 3 x's mean and that`s how i created the name of my studio and simply scanned my handwriting. as you can see, i like things simple and you can see it also in my designs. i use different materials and my favourites are silver, gemstones and natural or recycled materials. i also like to add swarovski beads to my work as they add lovely sparkle and they are popular and wanted by my customers.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I have always been very creative and most of the presents I give to my friends and family have been created by me. I went through different stages. I have been creating different paper based items, like cards, posters, gift bags, gift boxes and others. Then for some time I made candles, then I decorated them with decoupage technique. I still have boxes of serviettes from those days. Every year my employer organized a big Christmas party. It always had black tie dress code, so I made a lovely long red and black dress for myself. As I needed jewellery to go with it, I had a go with wire and Swarovski beads. That’s how I made the first roses. They are the most favorite creation among my customers, and I also use them in my banners, avatars and on my business cards. They simply became my logo.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I will cut the story short and will write only about jewellery. I use sterling silver, Swarovski beads and gemstones. I believe in the power of gemstones, love the sparkle Swarovski cuts into the crystals and always loved the color of silver. I started with silver plated to learn the different techniques, but I believe the time I spend designing and creating my pieces worth more in sterling silver.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Whatever job I do, I need to learn new things every day. Creating jewellery gives me that opportunity. I read a lot, try a lot and play a lot in my studio, that’s what I enjoy the most.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Interesting question. I think I would say strawberry. It has got simple but perfect flowers. Its juicy, its sweet and it looks so great in the basket on top of that market stall in the sun. Stands out in between leafs that have different color…Yes, I would say strawberry.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

If I knew how to use it, I would love to work with epoxy, would love to know how to etch silver. Epoxy gives silver that extra color and etching opens horizons when transferring images onto silver. I know, I know its still silver. Then I would like to work with wood, because its warm and has lovely deep colors. And if the project doesn’t go well, you sit in front of the fireplace and enjoy the heat coming from it.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

We are all different. We express ourselves in different ways and should keep that in mind and try to understand others. They are not better or worth more, they are just different. We are all unique. Handmade = unique.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

I will use the words from mics song:“...why should we wait for things we want in life when we can just go out and find them and stop dreaming our lives away...”; mic christopher Don’t wait, don’t let anyone or anything stopping you. Be creative.

FEATURED ETSY ARTIST - Pretty Little Love Objects by Blinking Mouse

Let's welcome PRETTY LITTLE LOVE OBJECTS by the Blinking Mouse, and hear what led this delightful artist to start designing her fun, colorful jewelry.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?
When I was young, I was a greeb, kind of a UK cross between what is now emo and a goth. Many, many, many plastic beaded stretch bracelets were the order of the day, and I used to make a lot of them myself. Eventually I stopped dressing in a way that reflected my musical tribe, but I was hooked on making bracelets and jewellery in general. I made a button necklace for my friends birthday, used some of the craft kits people had given me as presents, and became the unstoppable crafting machine I am today.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
I’m really passionate about jewellery, I still love to buy it even though I make my own, and I could sift through all the jewellery in shops like Accessorise and Topshop for hours (but people tend to drag me away). I just love sparkly, glossy, colourful accessories, beads are what my paradise would be made of. Jewellery making is also really easy to get into. You don’t need that much special equipment to start out with, not like working in clay, lampworking or sewing, you can just concentrate on buying pretty materials. I’m kind of impatient when it comes to having the right things to begin with, so I think jewellery making satisfied that need to get going straight away.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?
Picking colour schemes is so much fun, you can be so inventive and match colours you don’t often see together on the high street. Of course searching down the best materials is really fun (but bad for my bank balance) I’m constantly distracted on Etsy because I’m like a magpie with an obsession for bright and shiny things.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?
Toughie can I have two choices? OK...I think we'll let you have two choices!! I would pick a red apple because I just got the most gorgeous Swarovski bracelet given to me and it features a crystal apple. For me Swarovski is really the pinnacle of excellence in classy, grown up jewellery. If I could have a second choice (please) I’d describe my craft as a carrot because it’s a quirky choice and I love my pieces to have a personality. I also love to include unusual materials, like buttons and plastic stars, that people might think only belong in children’s jewellery. I use these items to create Pretty Little Love Objects that any grown up would love to wear to express their individuality. Love your 2 choices...Jodie!!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
I’d love to be a writer. I dream about it constantly, stop and start, and then return to reading to try to educate myself on how to get better.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
I really want people to start shopping properly. Shopping should not be a chore that you do quickly, buying dull gifts in a slapdash manner. You should enjoy picking out the perfect thing as a present for you or a loved one. If you put a little effort into finding a personal present you will get much more appreciation back, and that little cycle of events will increase the loveliness of the world. What a lovely thought!! So true!

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?
Try to get some sleep, at some point. It’s easy to get stuck promoting online for hours when you should be recharging your creative batteries. Pick promotional opportunities that are simple and effective so you have plenty of time to give to crafting and having a life.

I can certainly understand why Becky of FANTASY CREATIONS 1 said it was very hard to choose a favorite piece to have out here on her feature!! FANTASY CREATIONS 1 has absolutely gorgeous jewelry creations in her shop, so be sure to pay it a visit! I thought this necklace was particularly "striking", so I have also included a photo showing the entire necklace. Welcome, Becky, as she shares a bit of her thoughts and ideas about herself and her creations.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I NEED to create things, so my mind never stops thinking of interesting new ideas. I actually do several crafts, but I'll only talk about two here. I design stuffed animals based on photographs of real animals or fantasy animals I visualize in my mind. I began designing them when a friend of my mother gave me some scraps of fake fur. My first designs were little toy mice and bunnies. Next I designed a tiny horse. I also create unusual bead embroidered jewelry. I have always loved to sew and I bought a video tape that taught me basic bead embroidery and peyote stitch. I learned more advanced techniques by experimenting and reading craft books and magazines.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Pretty shiny things attract me, and I'm addicted to collecting and designing with beautiful beads. I work with a polymer clay or stone cabachon. I really like creating a unique piece with symbolic power.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I enjoy all aspects of creating bead embroidered jewelry. My favorite part is letting the design evolve and feeling like I am "in the zone" creatively. Selecting the right beads and the right look for the piece is done intuitively. I read a Psychology Today magazine article around 1980 that said non-creative people could achieve alpha brain waves through meditation, but when trying to be creative their brainwaves were in Beta. Creative people were just the opposite. Their brains went into alpha waves when they were creating and they experienced meditation as stressful. I support their findings. The more creative I am the more time seems to stop and the more deeply relaxed I become.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be, and why?

If I had to choose one more art form?... I would like to design picture/landscape art quilts based on photographs I've taken or images in my mind. I have several books about them and I bought interesting scraps of fabric. I'm actually working on a fabric book (not to sell) that honors the TV show (1988) Beauty and the Beast. It was the most amazing show full of longing, romance, poetry, and incredibly beautiful classical music.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

My message would be "Love." Love others, love yourself, love God, love life, love living things, love this beautiful world.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Advice? Find the thing that you enjoy doing so much that you can forget to eat and sleep. Follow your bliss. Become really good at it. Price your work with respect for your time and skills. Treat your customers really well. Ship quickly. Don't expect to make much money from it.

I am always delighted to see all the creative jewelry artists out on Etsy, and Mary Ann is right in there with them!! What a charming necklace, which she says is a part of her "Chandelier" series of necklaces. Very magical! What led you to start creating your art/craft?
I've always been involved in creative endeavors, but came to jewelry design 4 years ago when I moved to Los Angeles from New York. My Mother suffers from Alzheimer's disease and my brother and I decided we wanted to take care of her at our family home in Los Angeles. I packed up my "life", my dog and 2 cats, left New York to start our new life. Because caring for my Mom prevented me from having a full-time job, I started making jewelry from my home. Both decisions have enhanced my life immeasurably.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
I tend to wear black most of the time and loved to accessorize with interesting, artistic pieces. When the opportunity presented, I decided to design jewelry that reflected what I would buy for myself.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?
Not having a set plan when I start a piece, but to become inspired by the material and letting the piece evolve . I like the freedom to create different styles and not being confined to one particular look.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?
Organic European Salad Mix because it’s not boring. Instead there are many different colors, textures and sophisticated flavors and yet there is cohesiveness when you see all the greens mixed together.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
I’ve also created mixed media decorative boxes. I love working with different materials, textures, and techniques.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
That I create from my heart and my work brings me much joy. It is an extension of my personality, (always looking for something new and interesting to challenge me).

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?
To maintain joy in the process even on the days when you’re not inspired.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I've always been a bit of an artist. I started at a very young age with drawing, then music, then writing and then I added sewing and jewelry making for fun. I never expected to be pursing a dream to become a jewelry artisan, but the past two years have taught me that is the only talent of mine that I love so much that I want to support myself with it.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I tried beading before I turned to wire, but I just couldn't get it. I give credit to all the beaders out there as I can't tie a secure knot to save my life and clamping is near impossible. When I bought my first book on wirewrapping, and then made my first necklace (a green one that is for sale in my shop), I knew I had found a winner. Now, I can't make a piece without wrapping.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

That depends actually. On normal days, my favorite thing is simply twisting and braiding wire. On bad, frustrating, tear my hair out days, I really enjoy hammering full hard bronze wire or steel.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

I would choose a pomegranate to describe my art. That is because a piece may look simple at first glance, but the tiny details--the seeds--are what makes them special.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Probably paint. That is because I love to play with color and painting is something I know I can use to sooth me after a hard day, but then I wouldn't get to use a hammer.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I want to show that I can think so far out of the box that people will forget that the box ever existed. I was asked once what my style was and I came up with the words "elegantly funky" because my designs are as elegant, ethnic, hip and thoroughly eclectic as I am.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

My only advise would be to create to your heart's content, never give up, never compromise, and love every moment of it. Love it, baby.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?
My mother has always been very crafty, and she began making jewelry a long time ago. I decided to follow in her footsteps, so we actually make the jewelry together now!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
I love jewelry myself, as most women do, but I would see things in stores and say, I can make this, for half the price! So I started making my own stuff, got a lot of comments on it, and it blossomed from there.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?
It's so relaxing. I can take my mind off of stressful things in my life, and focus on making my jewelry.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?
Watermelon, because its a colorful fruit that people love to eat in the summer. I chose a watermelon because I love to use colors and I love to use leaves, which are alive and beautiful in the summer!!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?
I would love to make quilts. I have quilts that have been passed down in my family for generations, and I think that is so cool. I would love to create something for my children that they can keep forever (when I have them).

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
That we value beautiful and natural things!

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?
Don't be afraid to put yourself out there! If you love what you do, there are plenty of other people who will love it too!!

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

When I discovered that big superstore called the world wide web, I bought some handmade pieces, and that was the onset. Making jewelry satisfied my urge to create colorfull, glitzy and glamorous pieces, without any boundaries and rules. The more I make, the more ideas I get. When working on something that comes along the way I want it, which can take as much as a couple of months, I feel that I have found the ultimate way of expressing my creativity.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

It has been a journey of trial and error. But all along the way it appeared that small brass and silver components and Swarovski Crystal have the biggest potential to fit my designs. I guess you can say that the universe decided for me.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

The designing, with the biggest amount of gemstones, rhinestones, silver and brass findings you can imagine scattered around me. That gives me the biggest pleasure. And then, when it's completed, I hold it in sunlight or under multiple spotlights to let the sparkles explode and enjoy just looking at it.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Watermelon. Cold and sweet, a delicious splash of flavour, combined with bright pink and green colors.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Silver smithing. That will be my next adventure, as soon as I can find the right place to learn. In the past I have made stained glass lamp shades; I love working with solder, and I already have designs for silver jewelry in my head.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Live, love, laugh and wear as much shiny glitzy jewelry as possible.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

A lot of pieces I have made were - in my imagination - meant to be worn by Oprah or Queen Latifah. Dream big, and never give up on your dreams. No matter how young or old you are, the passion of creating brings the ultimate happiness and fulfillment.

WELCOME, JESSI....!

What led you to start creating your art/craft?
My path was a rather unusual one. I became a fan of a wonderful but short-lived television show called Firefly, and one of the characters wore a distinctive necklace made of leather cording. I searched for one like it but it was not for sale anywhere. Having dabbled around a bit with beginner jewelry design, I just made myself one! I was able to make an almost exact replica of the necklace, and on a whim I posted to a fan forum offering them for sale. I didn’t expect anything to come of it, but they started selling like hotcakes. Shortly thereafter I started offering simple beaded necklaces inspired by the show, and before long I had to open my own web store ( www.serenityverse.com/shop ) to handle the order volume. Over time I became better at what I did, learned a lot about designing, and thanks to the sales I was able to afford and offer better quality materials. Before I knew it……I was a jewelry designer!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
Initially all of my work was “stringing.” I used the materials that most appealed to me, namely gemstone beads, sterling silver, and lampwork. Stringing gets a bad name amongst jewelry designers because it is the most basic skill, and is often branded the hallmark of a beginner. That has always irked me because while the market admittedly is flooded with “beginner crafts” strung jewelry, some of the most stunning and artistic creations I’ve seen have been strung necklaces and bracelets. I have always felt, both as a beginner and later as an experienced designer, that a strung piece made with superb materials, quality workmanship, and most importantly a striking and beautiful design is something for which no apologies should be made.While perfecting, honing, and expanding my design skills (and my ever expanding collection of beads!), I dabbled in other mediums. Stringing beads wasn’t enough for me, but I had a hard time finding any other medium that felt “right” for me and gave me the artistic control I needed. I took a brief stab at lampworking, tried wirework, tried Chinese knotting, mangled polymer clay, and all it took was one look at seed beads for me to run away screaming!The epiphany snuck up on me sideways. I began collecting some beautiful cabochons made out of unusual gemstones, planning to wire wrap them. But every time I tried to wrap one, I was unhappy with the results. I didn’t enjoy wire wrapping, and most irksome was the fact that I had purchased these stones for their innate beauty and patterns, and wire obscured and distracted from them. I decided to have them set in sterling silver as pendants so that I could make necklaces with them, but I couldn’t find anyone to do it whose “style” was right for me. Then it happened….my eyes lighted on a dusty sign in a local lapidary supply announcing silversmithing classes.I signed up. I collected even more stones. The class was cancelled. A year later though, I was lighting a torch for the first time. By the end of the beginner’s class I was hooked. By the end of the advanced class I was obsessed. Not even six months after I started, I knew I’d found my medium….and I had acquired my own top of the line torch and more tools than I care to admit to.In silversmithing I have finally found a medium that gives me the creative control I desire and allows me to make things I’m proud of, and most importantly I love doing it. I will probably always do stringing and very basic wire work as well, especially incorporating my metalwork. But my focus has certainly shifted dramatically to silversmithing, and I only expect that focus to deepen.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?
I adore the creative control; the ability to be able to imagine a design that I think would be cool and then actually create it. That is quite a rush.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?
A pink grapefruit. Refreshing, tangy and sweet without either flavor being overpowering, the grapefruit is bold but not brash. The qualities of the grapefruit do a pretty good job of describing what I like to create; pieces that are different but not overpoweringly edgy, pretty without being “cute”, elegant but not snobbish, and clean without being boring.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
I want to convey the messages that are personally important to my customers. Jewelry is about more than simple adornment. It's about meaning; a wearable token for who we are, who we love, and what we admire. One reason I love custom work is that I get to create something that has deep and often hidden personal meaning to the person wearing it.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?
Do what you enjoy, and create what you like. There is a lot of peer pressure in the jewelry field to “be different!” “expand into other mediums!” and my least favorite, the unspoken encouragement of difficulty of creation over pleasing design. How, however, is one supposed to “be different” if everyone is struggling to do just that? In that case, are you not, by trying to be different, copying everyone else? What is new and different one year will be the overused trend the next. So stop trying desperately to be different, and be yourself….and that act alone will set you apart. Follow what you like and enjoy, and your own unique style will develop gracefully on its own, and your skills will surely advance along the paths that you are drawn to.
