What led you to start creating your art/craft?

My name is Tavia, I am 26. I recently got married in April of this year. I started looking for unique, classy and beautiful hairstyles for my wedding day. I knew our wedding would be a mixture of traditional and non traditional elements, and I already knew I wanted a classic and sweet, almost vintage look. I began scouring the internet and bridal magazines for veils and hairstyles, then I saw the birdcage veil...I had always liked them. I decided at that moment I would choose a short birdcage veil. Since the veil would be short, and delicate, I wanted to add a "pop" of color. My chosen wedding colors were pink and chocolate brown. Pink everything, all shades. I decided on attaching a feather fascinator to my veil. I saw so many of these fascinators being sold for anywhere between $40 and over $100 a piece in retail and bridal shops, and thought, wow that it too pricey for me. Then I had the idea to make my own. I could make it any style I wanted, and in any color. I wore a fuchsia pink and white feather fascinator with my veil on my wedding day. I also made coordinating hair fascinators for all my bridesmaids, and my mother. I also made my own flower bouquet and flower pomander kissing balls for both mothers, and all my bridesmaids. I had so much fun, and the best part, is that everyone kept a beautiful memory of my special day. They loved the kissing balls! My wedding day inspired me to begin the art of making handmade vintage inspired hair accessories. I felt so beautiful and got so many complements that day. I wish to provide other brides and other women to feel beautiful and to shine!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

My passion for making handmade hair fascinators, stemmed from my success with my wedding planning and design. I not only got complements, but I felt good about what I did, and I had so much fun. I was also about to create a unique wedding. I want women of all ages to feel unique and stand out from the crowd. All of my fascinators are different, no one is exactly the same, and although all women are beautiful, all are different in some way. Show your natural beauty and accent yourself with a pretty fascinator!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

The the freedom of choosing whatever color or design, knowing that my items are original, I feel a sense of accomplishment when each one is finished. And I enjoy hearing from others about how beautiful they felt when wearing it.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

I think a strawberry describes my fascinators. Strawberries have many personalities. A bowl of fresh ripened, just picked strawberries are sweet and maybe a bit shy, you bite into one and you feel a slight "crush" on them, but dip them in chocolate or top with whip cream, and you've got a romantic, flirty, and sexy dessert! My fascinators can be sweet and shy, worn with a simple sundress or jeans and a top, just like a first crush. Or turn up the heat with a little black dress or a formal gown and you are the belle of the ball!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I would add handmade purses and bags. I love all types of purses, and love finding unique or vintage looking ones. If I made my own, I would not only save money on buying purses, but they would all be so different and express my mood for that day.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Fashion is fun! Being a woman at any age is fun! I also want people to wear an item, knowing that the item was made with lots of thought and love, and was not just something found in a retail shop that was made on assembly line, by a machine. Handmade items, whatever craft they may be, are special, unique and loved by the artist who makes them.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Do your craft/art for the purpose of making yourself happy, do not do it just for the pure purpose of making it rich. Be reasonable in pricing, however, put into consideration the time, effort and materials used in your items. Create items with love and be proud of your craft. You have worked hard on it, never feel shy about showing others what you can do. On the other hand do not be boastful or prideful. Have fun.

Tavia, thanks for sharing your ideas and creations!! There is no doubt that wearing one of your beautiful accessories would make any woman feel very "special"! Be sure to visit BEE VINTAGE HONEY, and Tavia's other links below.
