A VISIT TO HARLEY DAVIDSON'S MUSEUM

FROM "FAIRIES AND FANTASY" TO HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYLES!

A VISIT TO HARLEY DAVIDSON'S MUSEUM

Today, my husband, brother-in-law and myself paid a visit to the HARLEY DAVIDSON MUSEUM. I was looking forward to seeing the changes that have been made to this area in downtown Milwaukee, (as we haven't been there for many years), but of course, Wisconsin's weather was at it again! It was pouring rain when we arrived at the museum's entrance this morning, so I only got a quick shot of the bronze statue above, which is at the entrance to the museum.

I've lived in the Milwaukee area all of my life, and have also been in love with motorcyles, and the freedom one experiences when flying down the road on one. Actually, that is how my husband and I met some 50 years ago. We've had a motorcycle ever since, and my husband worked for Harley Davidson for close to 40 years...in the shop, than as a high-speed test rider, and later as an A Mechanic.

It was fun seeing all the different models created throughout the years.
Below is the first Harley created in 1903.

The photos below will show you some of the motorcyles that are on display throughout the museum.

Me on an old Harley with a side car!

I'm not quite as old as the Harley!

That is one LONG motorcycle!!

These are just a very few of the photos I took today! If anyone is interested in learning more about the HARLEY DAVIDSON MUSEUM, click on the link below to visit their web site.

Now if our Wisconsin weather ever gets nice....we may get to go for a ride on our Harley!!

If any of you live in the Madison, Wisconsin area and are looking for something to do this coming Saturday, stop by and visit me at the 33rd Madison Aububon Annual Art Fair (hours are: 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.), which is being held this year at a new location....Warner Park Community Recreation Center. - 1625 Northpoint Drive., Madison WI.

My sister and I are usually good at getting lost when trying to find a new location, but since she has a new GPS system, I think we should find our way!! Hope to see you there!

Lots of great art, and just in time to find something "different" for a Mother's Day gift.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP -MIDNIGHTSKYE

8x10 Beautiful Bright Pink Roses

WELCOME, Toryanni and her Etsy shop, MIDNIGHTSKYE. When you pay a visit to MIDNIGHT SKYE, you will not only find beautiful photography, but also a selection of note cards. First, let's learn a little bit more about Toryanni.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I started making cards when I was 13, because my mom was really interested in scrapbooking, so I started my own scrapbook and progressed to cards. I actually am completely in love with paper and have a ton of it. When I turned 21, my aunt and uncle bought me my first digital camera, so I started snapping pictures of everything. I've gotten alot better at it now then I was before. I really enjoy it because, it's more active then the cardmaking.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I went to Joann's and started looking at the papers and the quality of them. Pretty much I like DCWV for my papers, they have the best quality and selection in my opinion.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I like putting the things together the most, making the selection of paper and ribbon to go with it. I also like that both photography and cardmaking release stress!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

I would choose an orange, because it's sweet but kind of tart at the same time! Plus I just really love oranges!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I would love to paint or draw because I'm not very good at either one of those, but absolutely love other peoples work.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Keep going! You never know when things may change!

THANKS, Toryanni, for taking the time to share your creativity with everyone! I especially love all your gorgeous flower photography! To find out more about Toryanni and her work be sure to visit her shop and other links below.

What led you to start creating your art/craft

I started to seriously draw at the age of 12, and started to paint by 10th grade. I had a very inspiring art teacher who gave me alot of encourgement.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Well, I started out using acrylics on canvas, but I always wanted to learn oils. When I met my girlfriend in college, (shes my fiance now) she pushed me to use oils and gave me some real informative lessons. Since then, I've have been an oil painter.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Um, thats a good question. I think, for me, the best part is actually in the preperation before I start a major canvas. My favorite is building the stretchers, and stretching the canvas, you have to put in alot of good craftmaship if you want a nice looking canvas.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

I'm not sure on how to answer that one so I'll say fruit??

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I am always a oil painter first and a spray painter second... but, I would choose spray paint, which I also do for fun on the streets. You can check my store to see what spraypaintings I have in stock, many for under $20.00. (had to get the plug in)

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

My art represents imagination, fantasy, magic, emotion, dreams, and any thing I can come up with. People always ask "how do you think of that stuff".....I really dont know...it just comes to me, like the wind.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Don't give up!!!

Tye, you have a wonderful talent and imagination! Thanks for sharing your work with everyone. Wishing you much success in the future! It has been fun having you out here on DZFANTASY as a featured artist.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - PLUM VALLEY DESIGNS - Custom Designs for Fashion and Fun

AUTUMN LEAF SET
(You can go directly to this item in Vicky's shop by clicking on the photo)

WELCOME, Vicky and her Etsy shop PLUM VALLEY DESIGNS. When you pay a visit to PLUM VALLEY DESIGNS, you will find a wonderful selection of jewelry....such as the beautiful necklace and earring set shown above. How romantic looking!

Island Dreams Orchid

(This lovely piece is now on sale at PLUM VALLEY DESIGNS...Click on the photo to learn more!)

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I started working with crafts and jewelry over 15 years ago. I began by making fancy masquerade masks in my parents garage (the only place I didn't have to clean up the glitter). I then decided I wanted to make my own earrings. I eventually worked my way into seed beads just before my oldest (who is now 12 and manages to take off with my beads now) was born. The beaded amulet bags seemed to be my downfall. I loved the challenge it offered. I even took my beads and patterns to the hospital with me so I had something to do in my down time before she was born! Then with children, came a pause in my beading until about 6 years ago. Now it has exploded all over my study and into the general public!

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I do not think I have decided on a medium yet. I feel that working with a little bit of everything allows for more creativity. I do have my favorites of pearls and semi precious gemstones though. Eventually I may even take up drawing, because I have tons of little slips of paper throughout the house with sketches of ideas I have during the day. Well, maybe not yet!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Sitting up until the wee hours of the morning getting that one design to flow or take shape. Also, I love being able to finish something and say "Now that is my best yet".

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

A mango. With the fullness of the color inside (deep to bright orange) it takes me back to the copper and golden colors I absolutely love. The rich copper tones of sunstones. And on the outside there is the green and red coloring of the skin which remind me of being outside at dusk with the scarlet red sun setting behind the lush green hills. There I go again sounding like I am describing a necklace or a pair of earrings!

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I would have to say watercolors. I really want to say finger paints(ah the things we learn from Girl Scout meetings)..... But with the great blending of colors, how they dance around each other with such grace. Water colors are really a beautiful way to express ones self.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I want people to know that you do not have to pay a lot for beautiful work. You can look great, know your jewelry is going to last, and that it won't be found walking around the corner and running into you. I think that everyone should have something special that they enjoy know that they have an original piece of jewelry.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Get out and be involved in your community events. Find local fairs or Saturday markets to showcase your work. No event is a waste if you can get out and promote your work! Find many ways to get your work out and be seen. Stand behind your work and do not be afraid that it is not good enough. Be proud to know that your works are hand made.

Vicky, it has been a real pleasure to have you and your work out here on DZFANTASY! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and creativity with all of us. Beautiful work! To see more of Vicky's creations be sure to visit her links below.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - VERRE DESIGN

LADY BUG NECKLACE
Glass Lampwork, Obsidienne and Silver Necklace
by Patricia Wood
of VERRE DESIGN

Patricia of VERRE DESIGN on Etsy is a talented jewelry and glass artist, from Quebec, who has some very exquisite creations in her shop. I find the creation of lampwork beads very fascinating, and love how they look, so I'm very happy to have Patricia as a featured artist out here on DZFANTASY.

Be sure to visit Patricia's shop as she has a large selection of beautiful necklaces, bracelets, earrings and more, in which she incorporates her wonderful handmade lampwork beads.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

Glassblowing always fascinated me. Encased pieces are almost mesmerizing... I started melting glass as a hobby that soon became a passion. I’ve also always loved original handmade silver jewelry. Incorporating some of my handmade beads into my designs sort of came naturally.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?
I don’t think I ever decided... It was just “it”!

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I love each part of it! I love the “zen” state I’m in when I melt glass, the concentration and attention it requires, the different textures and feels each color have, the planning it sometimes requires to make a specific design or achieve a certain effect. And I love designing jewelry, selecting components, working with silver wire and silver clay... coordinating it all to create unique and original pieces. And the smile on my face when I just get it right!

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Avocado – For its mysterious center, its soft, smooth and silky texture, its vibrant and changing color, it’s sublime look (and taste) just by itself or the great combination it makes with other ingredients.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPER EARRINGS

Handmade Lampwork Beads

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your "creativity", what would that be, and why?

I love writing and cooking and to make my own gift cards... but I will say sculpture – to uncover and touch the angels hidden in marble.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?
Accessories make the look – wear what you like and what makes you feel good.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Be passionate, curious and try different things. Remember that practice makes perfect and to train your creativity muscle every day. “Whether you believe you can make it or not, you’re probably right”. Find joy in creating.

THANKS, Patricia for taking the time to share your creativity and thoughts with all of us. Beautiful creations!!

Be sure to visit the links below to see and learn more about Patricia and her VERRE DESIGN creations.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - ART BY SARAH PITTMAN

Pegasus, Original Fantasy Art in Coloured Pencil
by
SARAH PITTMAN

WELCOME, Sarah Pittman and her Etsy shop which she calls ART BY SARA PITTMAN. Being a fantasy artist myself, I'm always fascinated how other fantasy artists make use of their creativity, and what mediums they use to express it. Sarah has some truly fantastic, colorful work, so be sure to pay her shop a visit. First, let's learn a bit more about Sarah.

I’m a fairy, fantasy and animal artist based in the UK, I work for the most part in coloured pencils, Faber Castell Polychromos pencils being my pencils of choice, although you’ll sometimes see other mediums pop up, and occasionally other subject matter too, because although most of my pieces are fantasy or animal related I do go wherever my muse drags me. I’ve been drawing seriously for around six years and started selling my work in 2007 and I always find it a little hard to part with originals (but I think most artists are the same) but on the same note I’m obviously pleased when somebody likes a piece enough to buy it, so I know its going to a good home and will be looked after. Im currently selling my work through Etsy and Artfire.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I think I got the art bug from my parents who were both creative, and I grew up watching films like Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Legend etc., which are still some of my favourite films to this day, and we always had pets around, so really its not much of a surprise that two of the main subjects in my art are animals and fairies. I can't remember a time that I haven’t loved both.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

About six years ago, after having done nothing creative whatsoever for a year or two (and before that only sketching and doodling really), I started drawing again. It was around this time that I came across ATC’s and joined a few trading groups, which I think really helped me get back into the swing of things. ATC’s were perfect because it meant I could experiment with lots of different mediums on a smaller scale, plus I had other artists to talk to for advice if I needed help with anything in particular. I think I first picked up the coloured pencils because I had some cheap ones laying about the house, and I liked the way you had a lot of control with laying the colour down. Shortly after that, I started looking for tips and advice about how to use them, but found I had a huge problem with layering and certain techniques because of the quality of the pencils - so as soon as I could, I invested in a set of artist quality pencils, and I haven’t touched others since. I could tell the difference as soon as I started playing around with them. The colours went down so much smoother and the colours themselves were much richer. I think I just got hooked, because even though I do use other mediums occasionally, coloured pencils are still my favourite.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I’m not sure. I find the whole process equally enjoyable, but I think I probably find it most satisfying when I finish a piece I’m really pleased with and I can look at it and say I wouldn’t change a thing. And of course its always exciting when somebody comes across a piece of your art that they love just as much as you do.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I think I’d choose oils. They’re something I would like to practise with and start using sometimes anyway, but I love how oil paintings can be so full of texture sometimes, you just want to run your fingers over the picture.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I draw things that make me smile, things I like or enjoy, so I haven’t really got a message behind my art, I just hope people find it fun and enjoy it as much as I do.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

I think its important to make sure that you don’t fall into the trap of trying to create art that you think other people will want rather than what you actually want to do. Also, I think its always good to stretch yourself sometimes, or mix things up a little, it helps keep things fun and fresh, so set by some time to create things that nobody else is going to see and just have fun experimenting with different techniques and styles.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - STITCHES OF THE PAST

Ruffle Blouse (custom sleeve size).

I'm happy to welcome, Brooke and her Etsy shop STITCHES OF THE PAST as a "featured" artist out here on DZFANTASY. Brooke is a young seamstress who enjoys creating styles from the past....Regency, Civil War and Turn of the Century. Be sure to pay a vist to STITCHES OF THE PAST. First, let's learn a bit more about Brooke and how she got started on her sewing venture.

Ladies' Regency inspired hat.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

My Mom sewed, so she taught me how to do modern sewing when I was around 4. I started sewing 'real' historical clothes about a year ago. I got started when my cousin made a "Civil War" dress. I really liked it. After a few months, I decided I wanted my own 1860's wardrobe. I started with making a chemise and a pair of drawers (I drafted the pattern for both). I also made some petticoats for my self. My cousin made my first dress, since I was still quite inexperienced. I was 11 at the time. I went to my first re-enactment a couple weeks later. Looking back I'm quite shocked at how farby I was. LOL. I didn't have a real hoop and my dress was WAY to long for my age. I've since fixed those things. Around 6 months ago, I made my little sister a full outfit including her hoop and I made my 2 year old brother a full outfit. I've also helped my older sister with some things. Me and my two sister's decided we wanted to match at a Renaissance Faire. We all made red and white dresses. From there I've just been sewing anything I can get my hands! I've recently been sewing for Originals By Kay, and then I started my Etsy shop. I hope to start marketing to theatre and movie productions. I've liked to sew all my life, but when I started making historical clothes that's when I found my passion for sewing.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I decided to sew because that’s what I’m best at and enjoy doing the most.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Probably making the item.
Newborn Baby Civil War Dress

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Peppers. I would choose that because there can be so many different kinds just like my craft.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Some kind of hand work. Probably knitting or crochet.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I don’t really have a message I'm trying to convey.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

It may take awhile to get started, but NEVER give up.

What a delightful young seamstress!! Thanks, Brooke, for taking the time to share your creativity and thoughts with everyone! One can even tell from the photos of your work that your creations are very well made. Best of luck to you!

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - TARA CREATIONS

ABSTRACT LANDSCAPE ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING- Make Way

The work of this "budding young artist", as Tara of TARA CREATIONS on Etsy calls herself, is quite wonderful! I think her abstract paintings have a magical quality to them with the colors and designs she creates. You will want to be sure to visit TARA CREATIONS to see for yourself just how beautiful they are. First, let's learn a bit more about Tara as she tells us about herself in her own words below.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

Nilgiris (meaning the Blue Mountains) is among one of the most popular tourist attractions in southern India. It’s a hill station blessed with natural creeks and rivers, gorgeous flowers and gigantic trees with almost all the shades of green that you can ever see on earth, and I was blessed to be born there. My earliest work in school, that I remember painting, was that of a leaf and then a tree. I believe my scenic motherland led me to create my art. Painting and drawing always has been a part of me since my childhood. It’s in me and always will be. My art teacher in school, my parents, my sister and my brother have played a great role helping me develop my art through their constructive criticisms.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I mostly did sketches with pencils in the past. These days, I work with Oils and Acrylics after being exposed to some of the greatest artists’ works that are found online, which turned into great inspirations for my medium of work.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

Frankly speaking, the actual process of painting is the most enjoyable because I just am out of this world when I do it. I am at a state of peace and joy when I do it and never want to stop. (That is- if my one year old doesn’t wake up from his sleep in the middle of the night!!) Now that I have started to sell my paintings to others, I believe I am being able to share the same feelings of joy and peace to those of you buy, or just even stop by at my online stores to admire them.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

Orange! It’s so colorful that it pops out amongst others and has many nutritious benefits too. So is fine art. It mostly is colorful; a painting with warm colors that can warm up a room can do the same to your spirit.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I would have been a graphic artist- because that’s something that amazes me and there again you have an endless possibility of bringing your imagination to life and play with a million shades of colors and an added benefit - actually edit them until you are satisfied.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I enjoy creating my artwork; I am at a state of peace and am happy when I create it. Hoping to pass joy and peace to all the wonderful people who can appreciate or admire my work. Happiness is very contagious!!

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

I am a budding artist and don’t have any great advice for others- but here is what I believe artists and crafters should do- Keep dreaming, keep creating!!

TARA, thanks for sharing your wonderful work, and also for giving us a bit of an insight as to what makes you the delightful artist that you are.

FEATURED ETSY SHOP - PIGATOPIA

I'm very happy to have this wonderful artist out here on DZFANTASY. Shannon of PIGATOPIA on Etsy is not only a talented artist, but I love how she uses the proceeds from her artistic talent to help animals. I'm sure you will find her work delightful. Be sure to visit her Etsy and Artfire shops along with the other links listed below this interview.

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

When I got my first pig, Vinny, I had no idea how hard it was to find a vet that would see and treat pigs. After calling around 30 vets, I was given a phone number for Noah's Ark Pot Bellied Pig Rescue. When I called, I talked to Lynne and I told her that my pig's hooves were over grown and his tusk was starting to touch his cheek. I was worried that the tusk was going to grow into his face. Lynne set up an appointment to come out to my house and trim the pig's hooves and tusk. When she got there, I was wondering how she was going to trim his feet and tusk, after all she was this skinny little thing. I soon found out. We had to catch Vinny and flip him over. Now this might sound easy but Vinny was over 350 lbs easy. It took 15 minutes or so, but we grabbed a hold of him and got his feet out from under him, flipping hinm over. Once we had him over he was not able to get away. Lynne's hubby, Ronnie, quickly trimmed his feet then his tusk. Once we had him flipped, it took 10 minutes to do everything. (this way is safe and painless). We flipped him over and he was on his way eating grass.

I found myself wanting to learn more about Lynne and Noah's Ark so I went to their sanctuary. I fell in love with Lynne's pigs and I soon learned how to take good care of my pig. When I got him off of dog food and put him on pig food, he lost at least 100 lbs. I became good friends with Lynne and donated money to help the pigs whenever I could, but found myself wanting to help her more so I started making art to sell at her annual animal benefits. I now make art to help aniamls across the world.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

That is a hard question. I love all mediums. I did not want to be limited in my abilites so I taught myself : oil paintings, watercolor, wood burned art, glass etching, and airbrushing

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I get to help animals in need. I feel better at night knowing I helped make a difference.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

A watermelon, because pigs love watermelons. lol

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

Watercolors..I am really good at watercolors, but that is because that is the medium I sell the most of.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I want to bring awareness to animal organizations and help as many animals as I can.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

Find your niche in life, do not try and copy what everyone else does. Findiing our own niche means repeat customers. Always try and make the customer happy.

Shannon, thanks so much for sharing your story, ideas and creativity with all of us. Keep up the good work!

FEATURED ETSY ARTIST - ART2ARTCOLORADO by CHERI NELSON

Precarious Balances III
Digital Painting and Collage - 11 x 14 matted

WELCOME, Cheri and her Etsy shop ART2ARTCOLORADO. As Cheri states in her shop's announcement.... Her work includes paintings, assemblages, mixed media and digital art that ranges from representational to abstract. When you pay a visit to ART2ARTCOLORADO you will have a wide selection of these different types of media. I always find it fascinating what can be done with digital painting. Be sure to take a look after you find out a bit more about Cheri and her work by reading her interview below!

What led you to start creating your art/craft?

I've had a love affair with art for as long as I can remember. I was fortunate in my early years to have had some wonderful art educators who sparked my interest in arts and crafts, along with strong support from my parents. Both were in their Master's degree programs, so I think that a desire to learn about the things I loved was almost a natural by-product of being the young child of two students. Art, crafts and books were ways that I could happily pass away the hours, and that remains true to this day.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

Early on, I was strongly influenced by the formal approach of art education. Drawing skills were highly stressed, along with the various elements of design, color theory and composition. I always loved to draw and painting took a natural path off of those early skills. Again, I cannot stress how important that the forward thinking of my teachers was to me. We were always given fun projects that pushed creative thinking and problem solving skills... so, even during the rare times that I would be a bit frustrated with the process, I now can fully appreciate that I was guided with the strong influence of classical art training. I have always loved to work in a variety of media with painting & drawing being my favorite. I spent many of my years in jewelry design working with silver and gold. I have a deep love for waxwork and have tabletop, sculptural pieces ready to cast in bronze if I can ever afford it. I took two years of photography in college and loved playing in the darkroom. I also did a year each in sculpture and also handbuilt clay work. I like experimenting with new media and techniques and love the fact that technology has now given artists one more arena in which to express their creativity with the advent of digital painting software. I am self-taught in digital art and it all began with the great folks over at Wet Canvas. A group of us 'novices' slowly played with this 'new media' and through fun sharing and support, each and every one of us has grown by leaps and bounds. So, as you can see, I've been all over the artistic map and that's where I'm happiest.

What aspect of creating your art/craft do you find the most enjoyable?

I think I enjoy the completion of a project best... and knowing when to quit. It's the wrapping up of what was only a loose idea into a finished object or visual statement that is the icing on the cake. The process is enjoyable, but there is always a goal in mind... a finished piece I see in my head. It's when the creative circle is truly present and then the journey on another path can begin anew.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art/craft, what would you choose, and why?

I have to smile at this because I've never thought about my work in this way, but I guess it could be a bowl of cherries. Some are sweet, some are tart...and sometimes you have to deal with the pits. Cherries come in a variety of beautiful shades of red, which in many symbolic interpretations is life itself, the lifeforce, the color of both love and blood. So, I guess in this regard, it all has to do with what art does for my inner spirit and the feeding of the deepest part of *me* and my love for how precious all of life truly is.

If you had to choose one other medium in which to display your “creativity”, what would that be, and why?

I couldn't pick just one. That is, unfortunately, not an option for me. I love the changing of the seasons here in Colorado, the distinct differences, each unique & beautiful in their own right and media choices are like that for me. I have the freedom to not be constrained and that's important to me for discovery. If really pushed, I'd say a simple 2B pencil with a good eraser and some nice paper. I think at the end of my days, I would like to exit my art life much in the same manner as I came into it... and that was with a good pencil in hand.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art/craft?

I think there are many messages in each piece and some more direct than others. Much of my work has to do with environmental issues and my love for wilderness and wildlife. I also tackle some difficult and more serious subjects which are important to me and that have to do with the darker aspects of mankind. Above all, I think art allows for life expansion, both for the viewer and for the artist, it's a strange place where fantasy and reality can become one. There is something truly fulfilling in that visual connection even if the interpretations are not the same. We all take from art a different message, but for me, the interactive connection is where a piece truly has 'life'.

What advice do you have for other artists/crafters?

My best advice is to let yourself be free in your work. Listen and learn all you can about techniques as you progress and don't be afraid to break with traditions and try new things. Be open to growth and don't let any setbacks deter you. Learn from mistakes as they happen. Don't listen too intently to the naysayers... they might mean well, but often they do not fully understand your creative dreams or desires. The artistic journey is yours alone to walk, and the directions you can go are wide open. Take risks, enter shows, challenge yourself and be open to progressive thinking and experimentation. You alone forge your pathways, so set clear and attainable goals. Follow your heart yet steer with your head. Above all, have fun on the creative journey.

Cheri, what a great way you have of expressing yourself...not only in your art, but with words as well. Thanks for a wonderful interview.

ABOUT THE "FAIRY FACE PIN":

SIZE: 1.75" x 1.75"
This little fairy face has a fun, fluffy hairdo which I designed from a fun textured yarn with a bit of sparkle to it. The colors are shades of purple and deep rose. Her hairdo is accented with a purple silk flower with 3 - 4mm Swarovski crystals sewn into the center of it.

Her face, like all of my creations, is 100% silk fabric, which I have individually hand-drawn, needle-sculpted and hand-painted. The eyes and lips have a coat of crystal clear lacquer, which gives her a very life-like, 3-dimensional look and shine.

The entire face has been sprayed with a matte finish sealer by Krylon, so it will not run or smear. The fairy's head, and the pin's clasp are cemented to a circular piece of texturized brass. These pins are my own original designs and take me about 2 hours to create. Each fairy face has its own personality, and wearer is sure to receive a lot of compliments.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
