What led you to start creating your art?

My mother taught me macrame knotting with hemp when I was 14 so I experimented with that and began to sell hemp necklaces at festivals. Then in college, a friend taught me beading techniques with seed beads, which led to a broadening of my repertoire. From there I just experimented and taught myself the rest. Making jewellery is something I've always done as a hobby. I make new pieces for myself each season, and then I make a few more and gradually build up stock. Every piece carries a history of where I was in my life when I made it.

How did you decide what medium you wanted to work with?

I think it chose me. I tried knitting and crochet, and just couldn't get the hang of it. I have a good attention to detail, and lots of patience so working on small pieces suits me. Also there's enough variety in the pieces I make that I'm constantly using different techniques and mediums.

What aspect of creating your art do you find the most enjoyable?

Being lost in it for several hours at a time...it allows me to just focus completely at the task at hand.

If you had to choose a fruit OR a vegetable, to describe your art, what would you choose, and why?

It would be an artichoke, as there's so many layers to it, and it's beautiful even when it's aged. It's not meant for mass consumption, and it can be an acquired taste. Artichokes can be very sensual when dipped in a garlic butter or decidedly rough when slapped on a pizza. Similarly, my jewellery can make you feel like a goddess or simply be the focus when you haven't showered for three days.

What message, if any, do you want to convey with your art?

That's there's beauty in small places. Of course jewellery is a way of expressing yourself just like clothing, so wearing beautiful things on the outside is hopefully a symbol of what you're like on the inside.

What advice do you have for other artists?

Go for it, if it makes you happy. Set your intention and follow your dreams!
